My Hutchinson UST Octopus suddenly developed a couple of bulges on the side. Tire weren’t that old, still plenty of tread left on them. I took the tire off and found the bead wires coming through in several places. Has anyone seen a tire fail like this before? I certainly haven’t...

Stans.

I've been running the same front tire with Stans for a year and a half with no issue, ran the previous same type of rear tire for a year with no issue. This tire has been on since the begining of summer.

Seems like it should be a warranty replacement. Probably too much of a hassle. I was just out for a very non-hardcore ride and was riding home on the street when I noticed, at first I thought the rim was tweaked but on further review when I got home I saw the bulges.

That is not the sort of failure that happens from a single incident or on a single ride.

I had a casing fail at the bead on an older but unridden tire (different brand) while the bike was hanging on the rack.

I had a set of standard wire bead Panaracer FireXCpros that were headed that way... I removed them for replacement due to tread wear and noticed that same sort of tear developing. I was running mine with tubes.

I have had that failure. Interestingly enough it was on a hutchinson as well. Spider 2.3 tubeless. I came down hard on an off camber. It held pressure, but bulged where the bead had let go. I have avoided most of the thin sidewall ust tires since.

Bummer

I had a Kenda Nevegal or Blue groove fail very similar to that. I was using Stans which looks like was in your tire as well. I hope it failed at a good place in the ride. I was lucky, mine blew just farted and lost it at a good place. We put in a Cliff bar wrapper and a tube and rode home. Chucked it in the can when I got home. Wasn't that old either.
Kenda says using Stans or any liquids in their tires voids the warranty. Bummer. When the system works it is the greatest.
