I'm going to try to make a college visit to Univ. of North Texas sometime and would like to squeeze in some mtn biking. Are there any good trails in the area? I've never done any biking in that sort of area and would at least like a little taste of it. thanks

I think is is called Johnson Branch State Park. They had a TMBRA race there fall of 2002. The most fun trail I've been on in a while. Tight and twisty, a little rock garden. The park has very nice facilities. It's on Lake Ray Roberts north of Denton. Check DORBA for LOTS of details on LOTS of DFW area trails. There are tons. Bar H in St. Jo is not too far and has awesome trails and is the site of s Spring Championship series race.

Denton has some great trails near it. Johnson Branch State Park is a very nice 9 mile loop. Isle De Bois has a 6 mile loop and is just across the same lake. Within an hour are at least 4-5 other really fun trails. I am amazed at how many nice trail there are around Dallas.

Thanks guys! Hopefully I'll be able to hit a couple of those when I get out to the area.

Try Mad Duck Adventure Sports in Grapevine Eric. They will be a few minutes south of Denton, but well worth the time. Clarence carries very good, high end bikes and will do you right. If time is a premium, inquire at Bluebonnet bikes in Lewisville. They will be closer to Denton, but the selection will not be as good.

Thanks r4b!

Ended up flying w/ bike (thanks American Air for the bendover upcharge...). First ride out of the box was Grapevine Lake N/shore trail - about 20 min's from inlaws, and suprisingly cool trail - it's amazing how much of a workout can be had w/ minimal climbs! Good tech sections, good flowing burms/jumps - old enduro trails I'm told. Ran into a recent relocate from the Phoenix area who said he'd been checking out local trails for a few weeks, and G/vine seems to be the ticket. I guess I lucked out!

An interesting side note, and plug for Mad Duck ~ early on my first ride, I noticed a heavy klunking from the front end off basically every drop or bump. At first I thought my front tire was underinflated, but on closer inspection found my fork (recently rebuilt Psylo SL) was only getting about half travel. Damper seemed to be working ok (rebound & comp adj still fine), u-turn ok, but felt like it was hitting something internally at about 3 in. I finished riding, then headed over to Mad Duck, expecting to get the usual 'dude, we're slammed - can't touch it til next week' routine. Instead, as soon as I walked in, they had my bike on a rack and coming apart. Turns out oil/air was on the wrong side of the lockout adjuster, causing the fork to 'hydraulic'. Probably due to depressurization (sp?) on the plane sucking oil past the lockout valve. The dude who fixed my up (possibly Clarence) mentioned that I should probably leave the lockout closed on the flight home to prevent reoccurance. Learn something new everyday, eh?

So they got me hooked up and ready to ride again in no time, and even invited me to join in on a shop ride this weekend. And yes, they do offer some nice high-end rentals for anyone else interested. Super cool bunch of guys, highly recommend their shop!
