Basically it's protecting your spokes from mis-shifts and trying to prevent your bike from becoming a fixed gear (no freewheel). Just make sure your rear derailleur is adjusted in tip top shape.

If it bothers you take it off, if not leave it on. Its cheap back up against a poorly adjusted derailleur (one where the stop is so out of wack that it could throw the derailleur into the spokes).

If you do keep it just be very careful. The fashion police are always out there and they do not take kindly to those protectors. This violation isn't as severe as having a riser bar with bar ends, but its pretty bad.

I kept my spoke protector on. I also have a 3 in. stem extender and platform pedals with Power Grip straps. I ride in old Land's End shorts and a dirty t-shirt. My pedal reflectors fell off and I am thinking of repacing them. The fashion police have been after me for months but I evade them by travelling at very high speeds.

You go brother! Reminds me of when my friend won a beginner race on his beat-to-hell Mongoose with about 3 gears that worked, mangled platform pedals and wearing a Metallica T-Shirt. Really pi$$ed off the other poser beginners with their $2000 bikes and spandex! I gotta see if he still has the pictures from that day...

I'm glad that the fashion police have different standards depending on where you live. Down here this isn't a problem and is actually the norm :D I personally have a1" rise and barends and wouldn't have it any other way :)

I still have my spoke protector on. In 3+ years, my chain has fallen towards the spokes twice. No, not often, and things are usually adjusted pretty well, but I don't plan to remove it. Mine is clear, and not too unsightly. I have seem some pretty big/ugly ones though...

Yikes....I'm guilty on both counts. Oh well, I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride. And I'm wanted. Wanted. Dead or alive.

Last summer...

I got a stick in my rear der. Before I knew it, my deraileur (DAMN THE FRENCH AND THEIR WACKY SPELLING!) and hanger were bent to hell. The deraileur was actually dragging on the spokes. The dork protector kept the chain from getting jammed btwn the cassette and spokes and/or mangling my spokes. It would have been a long walk back to the car. So it stays put on my bike.

I can't imagine a situation where the stop screw would come so far out of adjustment that it allowed the chain to be thrown over.
Try harder.

You could go on for months with the stop screw out of adjustment (or never properly set up at all) then all it takes is a change in the cable to pull it over. My friend had a new derailleur with the pull up type spring. He tried to tune up the shifting while he was riding turning a barrel adjuster, suddenly grind-chatter-twang-twang. His little "tune up" let the spring pull the derailleur into the spokes.
