I use thought I’d put this out there and ask the question. I just started about a year ago and as I’ve progressed Ive gotten more serious about the crash protection i wear.
But I read about and feel the bias against wearing armor and impact/ abrasion protective gear. The storm trooper comments etc. I started on a regular bike. Ibis Ripley , but as i got better and more fit and gnarlier terrain my back could not handle it , ( 2 prior surgeries). But even on that I wore knee/elbow and full face helmet.
Ive been able to keep going by getting on an ebike while I try and fix my back again. Now I concentrate even more on the downhill and trying to ride more gnarly terrain and develop those skills since I can’t really push the pedals.
I wear full protection every ride and Ive become used to it even on warm days. up to about 85 so far and im good I sweat but so what lol
But there seems to be a code in MTB that if you dont bleed you aren’t doing it right ! I would say I average about one crash per ride because I try and push myself. I know I’ve saved myself at least one broken elbow and numerous bloody rash incidents . Anyway I ride solo most times so who cares but Im curious
