So my wife has a Trek Roscoe with shimano gearing. The last few rides when she back peddles while stopped her chain will derail the front sprocket. I come from a motorcycle background so this is a bit different where do I start derailleur bent? Thanks for any help.
I can't claim to have nailed down the exact issue, but I had the same thing happening and it went away when I replaced the rear deraileur.

EDIT: I forgot an important detail. I was replacing the deraileur because the cam that engages the clutch had worn and the lever would no longer stay in place (the yellow lever that another poster showed in a picture). So slackness in the chain was likely a contributor.

I feel you know the correct answer and won't share your conclusions with the rest of the class. 🙂
I thought I had? I adjusted the derailleur so it stopped at the right spot in low gear l cked to see that the derailleur was not bent and I told her not to back peddle in low gear. So today or tomorrow we will go ride and see? Again thanks for the input and ideas.

This is a well known and published issue and it's not the cam wearing, it's the switch shaft getting twisted. All that needs to be replaced is the on-off clutch switch.

My response is to Clear2land.

Well that would have been good info ~1yr ago :ROFLMAO: I didn't see anything of the sort mentioned online when I was researching the issue back then. 🤷‍♂️

Well I think we have found the problem?
I had the derailleur high/low set a little off and we found out that with the crank sprocket that has different sized teeth that the chain is supposed to go on a certain way? I did not know that?
Here's to good riding.
