FWIW I have made several small ($10-30) orders from AlExpress since the De Minimis changes. While they all have the little note "includes import charges; est. other taxes" with some small upcharge, none have resulted in any additional charges on receipt.

Package arrived, anyone able to comment how USPS handles any potential fees?

From trying to check the tariff stuff online they're potentially liable for either free, 30% or 55%...

Not from Aliexpress. It was valued to customs at 990 Euros so I figured I'd just pay 10% but it got coded under the metals or autos tariffs I guess as well. So 10% base + 25% auto/metal + 2.5% of something else. They're from a custom window maker in NL.
Cool off-topic post, not related to bikes nor De Minimis. Helpful.

Keep on topic - My supply chain person did say de minimis exceptions will end in 2 years (July 2027). He thinks places like AliExpress/Temu its not going to cause many problems because two things will happen: Packages from multi-orders get bundled to get above the $800 threshold (Type 11 informal entry..google it) or more material stored locally in the US to pull from. Downside will be delays in delivery time and risk of lost packages.

On topic part 2 - tons of stuff from AliExpress last sale, showed up. No extra fees. Pricing in-line or better than what I was paying back in 2024. Got set of Rambler 45c in new HYPR-X for $70. Just 1 tire in US is $65.

Simply posting to let people know you may get an invoice in the mail later on orders coming in should your order be over the exception. Even if not, it depends on the broker being used for import (ups and fedex bill you later, dhl have you pay while in customs). It’s a convoluted time for imports so I figured the data point would be useful for people without “a supply chain person”.

It looks like the de minimus exemption is now scheduled to be completely eliminated starting August 29.
Thanks for posting this.

Articles like this usually have useful information, but more often than not they include statements that beg further explanation. In this example, two things stand out:

1) Any goods shipped through the international postal network will be subject to tariff rates based on the value of the package and its country of origin.
So are packages shipped outside the "postal" system (ie, UPS, FedEx, DHL) exempt from this? Or is "postal" a misleading reference to all shipment methods?

2) The volume of de minimis shipments has skyrocketed to 309 million units so far this fiscal year, up from 115 million for all of last year, the White House said.
Bolding above by me. Either the reporter made a huge error here, or the White House made a grossly misleading statement. Its trivial to look up last year's de minimis shipment volume: 1.36 billion. Just more 10X hyperbole from the White House??

Rants aside, better get those orders from Europe done in the next 30 days. End of an era for deal-seeking cyclists.

The article wasn't exactly accurate. Here is the actual White House release:
Effective August 29, imported goods sent through means other than the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be subject to all applicable duties.
For goods shipped through the international postal system, packages will instead be assessed duties according to one of the following methodologies:
  • Ad valorem duty: A duty equal to the effective tariff rate imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) that is applicable to the country of origin of the product. This duty shall be assessed on the value of each package.
  • Specific duty: A duty ranging from $80 per item to $200 per item, depending on the effective IEEPA tariff rate applicable to the country of origin of the product. The specific duty methodology will be available for six months, after which all applicable shipments must comply with the ad valorem duty methodology.

Actually the reporter is largely just quoting the White House fact sheet. Unfortunately, this White House can't even write a "fact sheet" that doesn't contradict itself in the same document. Any half-smart proof reader would flag the conflict between these two bullets:

- Between 2015 and 2024, the volume of de minimis shipments entering the U.S. increased from 134 million shipments to over 1.36 billion shipments. On average, CBP processes over 4 million de minimis shipments into the U.S. each day.
- The volume of de minimis shipments, even from countries that historically have not been the primary source of de minimis abuse, has skyrocketed this year, with 309 million so far for FY25 (through June 30), compared to 115 million for all of FY24 resulting in significant lost revenue for the United States.

The reporter was simply referencing the second of the bullets above (despite it being grossly false). In contrast, the numbers in the first bullet correlate well with established data, but weren't referenced in the article.

But what else should we expect from the administration of a president who claims he will reduce drug prices by 1000%.

RIP finishing budget builds with high quality, inexpensive small parts from AliExpress. This Sentinel build is probably going to be my last one for the foreseeable future. I'll be riding my current fleet through the dystopian hellscape that's descended upon us.
