Yo, was actually looking some original parts in google and found this site by accident. Seems there is few projects for oldie nrs4 myself included, here what i have done so far. Basically upgraded/fixed everything, cant wait the summer, allthough had to do some test runs at winter now. Actually its a ton of fun even at winter, grip seems decent even without spikes etc.. I was wondering does ppl still use the original rear shock? I was able to find repairkit for it from our local dealer who ordered it from giant, according to giant they dont have many of those left so i was lucky i quess. It is discontinued now so in the future might have to buy new rear shock. More likely new bike, but we see where this hobby gets me :D

I was searching for some info for a frame I just had to buy, "second hand", last year, when I saw this community now. 👍
The frame I bought was a Giant NRS composite, maybe 2004?
I have upgraded my 2014 Giant Trance 4 over the years = some parts lying around, why not build another full suspension bike without spending rediculos amount of money?! I didn't knew anything about the NRS when I started my build. My goal was a more trail-bike, thereby shocked when reading some history/stories about the NRS model being like a hardtail and dangerous!😬. And the bobbing!

Had a very good ride yesterday, and I had to post my story, to honour the NRS (no longer original, though).
Key changes;
Add on bracket built for longer shock-travel, now 200x57. Fox recomended sag used.
Mullet; 26 rear and 27,5 in front. Tried 27,5 at rear as well, but clearance is an issue.
The fork is for 26, but take a 27,5. Travel is 100 mm.
Short stem and wide bar (60 and 700).
Consider the horror stories, I must say it rides well 🙂. Can't say there is a bobbing problem when pedaling. On tarmac I lock both shocks.

Follow-up:
This is maybe not a tribute to The Eternal Giant NRS, but I had to prove to myself that I could bring the feeling I felt from the first build and bring it somehow into the future specs.
I like the way it performs 😀.

Some specs:
12 speed
29" sat up tubeless, 29x2.40 f + r.
A lot of work to triangle ends so drop-out brakets for 142x12 could fit.
Extended triangle 40mm to fit 29" by cutting it in half, then using carbon to rebuild it. Still holding strong.
Tapered fork - used an adapter.
Sram Guide R (fixed issue) + 180mm rotors.
Shock adapter in carbon now.
Built a new bottom bracket shell 50mm downwards and 15mm forward.
Power meter from 4iiii, left crank.
Training wheels on picture.
Weight: including pedals and with American Classic Wide Lightning wheelset: 12,7 kg

Yes, I did some welding.
As mentioned, 27.5" at rear is a problem. Rubbing towards the seat tube when compressed. And then you have the mud-problem at the upper arc. The upper arc being the worst.
26" rear wheel is best.
I made the bracket so the original angles stayed the same.
Beware of clearance for aircan coming down.
In my opinion, a good shock mounted like this (and as mullet) is making this bike much younger.
Good luck!

Not sure how many people are still here, but I've been using this forum for a bit of guidance on the NRS. I'm almost finished building up mine for an upcoming bikepacking trip. This was 90% old parts I had lying around, so wasn't a huge investment. I resprayed with a two tone green fade. Running a 27.5 mullet setup which gives it a more contemporary/aggressive geo. 12 speed, tubeless and internal dropper. Had an old manitou rear shock fit perfectly. I'm very happy with it so far. A few more tweaks and she's ready to go.

I'm back on the NRS Train! Found this 2005 Composite 2 for $200 and worked on it today.

I had to replace the DU bushing at the top shock mount but luckily I had an extra (plus a vise and a 10mm and 15mm socket to use as press fittings).

I pulled the stock Fox off (it works ok, but I've been pretty happy with these Noleen air forks - and they are about 1/2 lb lighter than the stock Fox F80 FRL.

Also had to swap out the chain, rear cassette, derailleur and shifter (rapid rise!) as the stock stuff was shot. So maybe not a total steal. The Schwalbes were left over from a previous project. It still has a few odd creaks and clunks - . The suspension linkages feel tight so maybe the cranks will come off next.

I'm 150 lbs and 125 psi in this Fox shock (single air chamber) seems to be the "no sag" point. It still holds air but it a little loud when "topping" back out again after a compression.

Anyway, as an F1 fan I love the Renault Sport background of this design and will have fun messing with it.

Looks wild bud, love the tan wall tires.

I see it mentioned in the first post - but does anyone have any direction or history as to when the upper link changed between the silver version that my 2005 NRS Composite 2 has and the black/2-position upper link like kegu's bike and some others? Mine is seemingly a very late production NRS, but it's equipped with what I imagine to be the older/original silver linkage piece...

Just curious.

fatchanceti,

Good eye, I'm also curious to know about that linkage. I looks adjustable for travel and what was the purpose. I'm tuned in and waiting for one of the forum elders to chime in and educate.

From memory my manual said it was just a 10mm travel difference and nothing else for the linkage positions. I assume back then 10mm would have been considered relatively significant. Regarding the ‘no-sag’ setup, ignored as found it waaayyy to stiff. I run at least 10% sag.
