i really like those tiny rattlesnakes that are curled up in a perfect little circle, about the size of a cooky. pretty cool.

that little ring necked fella looks super cool. i haven't seen one like that yet.

my neighbor and i went to marshall canyon the other night. i am always telling him about the snakes i have seen. i think he thinks i am full of balogna. anyway, a guy and his daughter cruise past us on their electric scooters. next turn, they are pulled over helping a little rattlesnake off the trail.

Didn't get a reptile til getting home and taking the dog out for a walk. Found on an edge of the property that borders a huge retention basin and park, so not a surprise, although it might only be the 2nd snake I've personally seen here in almost 20 years. Went back with the big camera but the little fella had disappeared already.

Non reptile sighting on the morning ride was still pretty epic though. Came across a tarantula hawk dragging its fresh prey off to pair with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

i had a not-so-great reptile incident a few weeks ago... riding at the desert conservancy place just north of Jtree. ending my day and just cruising down the luge route back to the car. about halfway through i go over a small rise and there is a dog just off the trail. this guy yells at me "have you seen my dog?" - "yeah he's right here."

i stop and look down, and the dog is playing with something that looks like a small football. it's a f** tortoise. i jump off my bike and yell at the dog to drop it and leave it. of course the dog starts snarling at me. i get between it and the tortoise and it is going ape ****. guy finally comes over and is trying to chase the dog away. i'm like "dude, your f** dog is trying to eat a f** tortoise." "ah man, it's no big deal, the turtle is just scared, that's all...." ugghh.

anyway, he can't get his dog to go away, so he picks up the tortoise and hands it to me and tells me to ride off with it. f*.... so i do, and his f**** dog is chasing me. finally the dog goes back to him and i ride for a ways and put the tortoise down. i dug a pit next to the tortoise and emptied my camelback into it. luckily i had about a liter left or so. i've heard when tortoises get scared they urinate all of their water out and it puts them at danger of dehydration.

what a crappy way to end an otherwise excellent day of riding.

All this time I coulda skipped the obscenely expensive bike stuff and physical exertion of riding trails by just wandering my property perimeter apparently. Just spotted this db while out for another pup walk.

Next, you'll be seeing Gila Monsters there, and then, ...Chupacabras.
