Is this the part where I say "well technically, if this had existed 20-30 years ago, it would be called a moped" and "it has a motor, and pedals, that seems an appropriate term"?
I've got no beef with ebikes (see my recent ride report on them if necessary). But I don't get why non-ebikers get angry at ebikes (if they're legal in the area/etc/etc), and similarly don't quite understand why moped would be offensive to the ebike rider.
Its ok that ebikes are different than bikes.
I was a bit curious, and looked it up.
I knew ebikes (class 1-2-3) are capped at 750w or 1hp (DJI motor notwithstanding...). But it appears that your stereotypical 50cc moped is likely more in the 2-3hp range.
Max speed for ebikes (assisted speed) is 21, or 28mph, while mopeds will do more like 30-45mph.
ebikes don't require a license/etc, mopeds do.
So, it would appear that they are sufficiently different, at least the class 1 ebikes we're supposed to see on trails. And maybe it is a bit of a derogatory remark in that light. That said, there are a TON of weird commuter ebike/moped style things that do have 2000w + range, so those definitely do seem like they could just be called modern mopeds.
Anyway, sorry, don't mean to derail, just was curious, and was sharing.
