I’m working on shaving some weight off my wife’s hardtail, and the OE aluminum wheels need to go. She’s light, and doesn’t ride hard, so I’m on the hunt for a budget (but reliable) lightweight carbon wheelset. Boost, HG or MS, preferably CL, and definitely sub $1k.

Anyone seen any killer deals lately?
BTLOS or EliteWheels maybe? Have heard good things, but never been down that road.

Ibis has some s28 wheels on a good sale.

Be advised these are non-boost.

BTLOS makes some excellent wheels. I put a set on my wife’s Shadowcat and she loves them. How about this 1300g set for just over $850 with free shipping?

Honestly, and that price I’d buy the Enve’s listed earlier in the thread.

I’m sure those BTLOS are great, and even a touch lighter, but it would be hard to choose them over the known Enves at the same price.

I hope your wife likes loud hubs. Those hydras sound like a swarm of angry bees chasing you. Also, note that the Enves are centerlock rotors. You can get adapters if her current rotors are 6 bolt. Oh, and those Enve m640s are enduro wheels with 40mm internal width. They weigh about 1600g, or about 2/3lb more than the BTLOS wheels above. No question that the Enves are a quality product, just realize that’s not an XC wheelset.

Yea, I’ve heard good things about BTLOS too, and some other AliExpress brand… just haven’t been down the Chinese brand wheelset rabbit hole yet. May have to do a little research.
The hubs are unknown without standard replacement parts on budget Chineee wheels. Unless it’s an exact DT clone like Goldix 370.

Another option, lower gearing makes up for heavier weight If a little more time on the climb is acceptable.

Those ENVE’s are a great price but I’ve had most of the major players and ENVE’s are the only carbon wheels I cracked….and they did NOT honor their lifetime warranty. I have a set of NOX that are 9 years old and still going strong on bike #3. My Reserve 37’s are my favorite “riding feel” carbon wheels, the early NOBL’s were my least favorite.

My buddy bought a set of BTLOS wheels in 2023 and he breaks everything (he even bent a fork) as he goes big in the bike park and they are still in one piece.

I don’t mind Hydras, and I prefer center locks….

But good observation on the 40mm width. I missed that when I skimmed over them. Definitely takes them out of consideration.

Specifics??? Boost? Tire and rim width? Freehub type? $$$???

Everything in 27.5 size has been heavily discounted for a while. Unless you're looking for something really unusual, well priced 27.5 wheels should be easy to find.

I'd be leery of mystery brands though. Especially when putting wheels on someone else's bike.

Reynolds Blacklabels are a very good value in my opinion.

There are lots of Roval 27.5 wheelsets on ebay.

I have 2 BTLOS wheelsets. 1st set is this model in AM Version (29er) with the DT Swiss 240 EXP Center Lock. Total weight is 1283g and it is on the Trans1tion Spur. The second set is the "WM-i30ASW All Mountain Enduro Wavy Asymmetric Shallow Carbon Wheelset, also with DT Swiss 240 EXP in 6-Bolts. Weight is 1397g. " 29er 30mm inner width All mountain Enduro shallow carbon wheels - Btlos Bicycle . This set is on the Santa Cruz Tallboy5. If I want another WS, i would definately buy for the 1st set version, WM-i30AS, in 6-Bolt disc rotor version.

On this note, I also have a question: finding a good budget 27.5 boost 30mm iw rear wheel with microspline seems impossible. All of the options on Hayes bicycle are sold out. Anyone know where to get one for less than $125?
