Anybody else riding a Hummingbird for Sea Otter? If so, what’s your set-up?
FWIW, I'll be "racing" in the Fuego XC (~21 miles, 3400 ft) for the second consecutive time. Coming back from a broken clavicle and 4 months not riding, but training for past month has gone well.
I'm using the NMW stock set up:
2.4 Vittoria Syerra tubeless, which I've ridden all over the terrain of Ft. Ord and Sea Otter.
Astral Serpentine 30 iw wheels
SRAM GX 32 x 10–52
170 GX cranks
1 or 2 28–32 oz (or 1 L) water bottles

Way to go on the recovery and training! That's good work.

And thanks for the breakdown for the second Fuego XC on your HB . Sounds like we'll be running pretty similar setups which gives me a bit more confidence coming into my first time riding the area. I hope to see you out there! My HB is grey and HUGE.

Thanks! I hope to see you there. My HB is dark blue with subtle sparkle and Medium+. (Photo on p. 10 of this thread.)

Looks great with those fox stickers torn off of the fork. Is that the stepcast 34?

And I’m a little jelly of all that peanut butter bling!
Thanks, I actually ordered an OEM step cast performance elite from Jenson USA and it arrived without any decals. I was actually stoked. I used to have a 2020 Specialized Fuse with copper decals that matched the deity stuff perfectly, looks good on the Desert Cream too!

Riding? Racing? If racing what race(s)?

Everything around Laguna Seca is sand, I like my trusty Nobby Nic’s. There isn’t much risk of flats so generally you can get away with a lighter tire set up than you would run if your normal riding was somewhere rockier. I’ve done the hardtail dh course on Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge 700x55’s on my Hummingbird, then did 30 miles of xc into Fort Ord on the same bike and tire later the same day.
When ordering my Hummingbird, I wondered if Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge would suffice, particularly at Ft. Ord. Now I know! (y)

So rad to discover this thread. I can tell there is so much bike-passion here and some really cool stories about your builds. Posts #315 and #442 are the winners in my book, but so many cool builds.

My carbon hardtail frame cracked a few weeks ago, only a month after I built it up. In my depressed state of mind, I somehow convinced myself to ditch the plastic and buy something steel! So a ‘poor mans’ Hummingbird is on the way. Will probably have some questions as I build it up so I’m stoked I found this community here.

Juggling between building up an XC hardtail or a Hummingbird. Anyone have experience on a Chisel or something similar able to compare the two? I’d be building this up to take the place of a Spur and my Gravel bike (have a Sentinel for rowdy days).

Questions:

Does it feel snappy pedaling? My hardtail experience is a Ragley Big Al and Meta AM HT, which I felt didn’t really pedal any better than my Sentinel except on paved surfaces. Will the HB feel a little more excited to climb or pedal in undulating terrain?

Anyone speak to weight of their ML or L builds? Going to pull over my X01 groupset, Nobl TR32 hoops, and Mattoc from my Spur. Shooting for 26-27ish, doable?

Sizing - I’ve always ridden large frames, 5’11, average inseam and reach. I was contemplating going ML to make the bike feel a little more snappy and XC like, but also am worried I’d feel too cramped and/or my weight will be too far back over the wheels leading to the front end wanting to lift. Anyone been 5’11” and gone with a ML?

Thanks all!

I'm 5'11" and got the ML+. It's perfect. Not ridden the Chisel. My every-day fun bikes for the trails I most enjoy are the Spec Enduro and Turbo Levo E-bike. Sold my Spur in favor of the HB. It was a fantastic decision. I've only run the HB as a SS.

Little more upright and touch more forward on the HB vs Spur. But despite the steeper geo, It still goes DH with more confidence than I'd have expected, particularly since it is super snappy (which you mentioned you want). Pedal feel is definitely very good, but tough for me to provide a good reference because it's my first hardtail MB. And set up as SS, most of my climbing is standing.

You're correct - ML+, so, custom. ML+ is exactly right for me. If I was to go with the core version and being 5'11", I personally would lean more towards an L over an ML, now that I know exactly how the ML+ feels. But I recommend having a discussion with Nick on that one before you decide.
