Wow, that's a huge temp difference. Here it's similar, but not as extreme, ranging from around 8C early in the morning to 20C in the afternoon. Beautiful sunny weather these days too. Not easy staying focused at work, feel the urge to go out and play!

The trails dried up in just a week, I spent Saturday's mtb ride trying to adjust to the loose conditions. We had a 3 month streak of wet/damp terrain which is pretty rare in this part of the country.

Normally we have those temp differences in may, not early march.

today was very foggy and below freezing, I even had some hoarfrost on my gloves this morning

on the way home my saddle wiggled a bit, after inspecting it at home I found that one of the stays is broken but everything was held together by the clamp of the seat post. I swapped the seat post including the saddle from the mtb to my commuter and will get a new saddle later.

I came across the same spot this morning and the bike was still there and it had the lights still on 🤔😰 . That is how a lot of those movies start, like “wait, did you hear that?”

The other saddle felt a bit weird this morning. Even when it is the same model it feels very different.

All in all uneventful rides, but the bike needs some care after the winter. Apart from some lube on the chain I didn’t do anything for over a year. Brake and shifting cables seem to have friction, chain is too slack, dirt everywhere. The next warm day I’ll be out working on it.

Took the broken saddle out of the seat post. I was lucky that the crack was within the clamp so the clamp kept everything kind of together until I got home.

Luckily these saddles are very common here so probably I will get a hardly used one for a good price.

Edit: I will also have to get a seat post with more setback since this saddle was all the way back, which probably led to the failure.

Mine is in a state of serious neglect too. I haven't cleaned the drivetrain in ages, just add lube once in a while. Both wheels are in need of minor truing and I won't talk about cleanliness. Shifter and brake cables would be ripe for replacement too, they have more than 10.000km.

The beauty of the commuter bicycle is that it's a simple machine that keeps working with minimal maintenance though.

@justwan naride
My bike is not a simple machine, but with the gear hub, chain glider and extended fenders it stays at least “relatively clean” .

@NoCanSurf
Sorry I scared you with my saddle. I actually only noticed it was hanging downward a bit and a bit wobbly.

I was overtaken by a coworker/friend this morning. He has this fancy gravel/commuterbike and while trying to keep up I made my fastest ride morning ride in months. Ride home was uneventful.

Unexpected -3C this morning but I made it.

Added 2hrs of kayaking tonight. And I rode 4 days in a row this week. Will work remote tomorrow and I am off next week, but will keep an eye on the forum.

In the USA/canada there will be a full moon eclipse tomorrow morning. Overhere the moon will go down before it starts. Someone might be able to see it on their commute?

…..and I am off next week, ……
That doesn’t mean the whole forum is off ^^ where is everyone?

So I’ll just keep talking to myself here.

Today was really nice, sunny and 19C so my sons and me made the first Picknick trip today.

And I found a fully for my oldest son! I got a bargain from Cube. Frame in good condition and nicely spec’d. It is still a 26” bike but for his size (165cm) that is still ok. Although it is too small for me, I can’t wait to take it for a spin myself 😉

Hi dutchman! I'm still around. Don't break your son's bike before he can ride it. ;)

Winter slammed shut here. I rode across the lake last Thrusday and it was just like mid winter. I took a car on Friday. We had a few days of sun then warm rain with no below freezing temps and ALL the snow is gone. The lake had 2 feet of ice but it is probably close to ice-out 1 week later.

Todays ride was gross. It wasn't raining but everything was wet and the bike was covered in grime and I had the skunk stripe up my back.

Cold, even hail a couple days. No meetings to ride to. No word on a new office. At the same time, colleagues at another regional office not being told their lease was being cancelled. So maybe no office? I don't know.

But trying to set up a regular Tuesday lunch meeting with other colleagues. And the weather is starting to look a little sunnier in the days to come. Maybe I'll have a commute report soon.

I'm going to be off the bike for 3+ weeks.

There was a faster than expected tumor (not cancer) growing in my hand along my nerve, that had to come out. It was first spotted when I had an MRI for my OA (Osteoarthritis). I was able to delay the surgery to line up with my spring recess (I guess they'd not called spring break any more).

My spring recess lines up with my 14yo daughter's spring break (but her break is two weeks), so I got to watch her play video games while I was enjoying/suffer the pain killers. It was nice to have her about to help. She's spending the second week of her break, in Japan with her mother.

Turn away now, if you're easily upset.

I think the purple line denotes the path of the nerve, my ring finger is still numb, but once in a while my ring finger just hurts, like fall to your knees and cry hurts, and suddenly stops as fast as came on. I have most of my movement in my hand back, but there's a lot of pain/numbness, still. There's no way I'm holding onto handlebar anytime soon.

Hey guys, stopping in to say hello. @cyclingdutchman - good to see you are getting regular rides in. @bedwards1000 - seems like you only got a few lake crossings in this year? @NoCanSurf - sorry about your hand, heal fast!

I'm easing into at least semi-retirement. I decided to not ride my bike at all in Febuary. I've got just a few rides in this month, but plan to start ramping my mileaage back up. Here is a recent ride:

Otherwise, I bought a pair of skate skis and have been teaching myself how to skate. It's one hell of a workout. A nice thing about skiing mid-week is there are hardly any others around so I often get to ski freshly groomed trails.

Finally, I decided to upgrade my ten year old mountain bike with something more modern! 2023 Stumpy EVO Ltd. I have not ridden it yet, probably next week.

I sure miss my commute, but I don't miss working :) Ride safe everyone.

Thanks @rdawson808. I started working when I was 16 and except for a couple breaks between jobs have worked continuously since then (64 now). It's been hard to wrap my mind around not working fulltime anymore, but I am quickly getting there. I really miss my bike commute a lot, however.

The photo is my shop. I do all manner of projects in there. I am also finding that it gives me a place to go so I don't drive my wife crazy. She has to get used to me not working too!

I recently heard what I thought was good advice. It's good to have a plan before you retire and you need to start working into it before you retire. Find the things that interest you that you want to continue as you retire and start doing them before so its natural. Sounds like you've got it sorted.

You could consider faking the commute. Make it a daily thing to get up, ride to the local coffee shop or wherever, have an espresso, chat for a bit, ride home. For me it's the routine more than the destination in particular.
