not too much info out there on these since its such a small market. i saw one thread where someone managed to get narrower cranks on their blizzard but not too much details other wise.

anyone here switch their crankset with luck? looking at the race face turbines in 165mm but the 190mm spindles are out of stock everywhere and have been for a while. i also wouldnt mind a narrower q factor so was wiondering if anyone has had success with the 170mm spindle. did you flip the chainring? or go with a wide ring? just based on measurements alone ,i should have ~5mm crank clearance to the chainstay bringing the q factor in about 1cm on each side. however, i dont think the chainring will clear the chainstay.

I'm running Turbines on my Fatboy, with the 169 spindle from my Next R. Keeping the new 189 spindle from the Turbines for possible future use with one of the Farleys. Of course, I might consider selling it with warranty Next R carbon arms, but you wouldn't pay my price since I'm not motivated to sell.

Get Fat 5 SRAM cranks.

a buddy of mine has the stock chainring with the raceface SL cranks. 169 spindle as well. it just barely fits. i ended up ordering a 169 spindle to fit turbines and a 3mm offset chainring to help with clearance. thanks for the responses. i got some assurance in the other thread from another user as well that ran 169 on his RM and a +4 offset wolftooth. i will post updates once i get all the parts in and installed in case anyone else was looking.

because im not very smart, i just want to clarify....you are running the boost chainring which is +3 offset (+3 being inboard towards the bike) but flippped so you get 3mm outboard away from the bike?
Correct, normal boost is 3 mm inward... so this ends up at 3 mm outward. Chainring has plenty of clearance. In my case, the cranks are super close to the chainstay... but so far a few rides in and no issues.

thanks. running through a million scenarios since the 190 spindles are impossible right now, its been a good thing to be able to push the qfactor in seeing that it works for people.

as for crank spacing, my math tells me 4mm. yeah, a bit closer than most people prefer for sure but i think this is manageable.

i come back with some info.

for those on shimano - you shouldnt reverse rings as the rings are assymmetrical - i got the same answer from WT, RF and RM.

WT is the only company that offers a negative offset (greater chainline) for shimano (Camo reverse dish spider with +4 chainline )

RF recommended the wide chainring which is a 0 offset - this brings the chainring 7mm inboard instead of 10mm

RM doesnt recommend 170 spindle as the chainstay clearance will be under the industry standard 8mm of clearance, but did say it would fit (and obviously it does) and would probably be ok. RM recommends a chainline of around 75mm and if you run shimano their quick fix was to run a KMC 12spd chain and flip a RF boost chainring(+3) non shimano specific, to get back closer to the 75mm mark. they said moving directly to a 170mm spindle puts the chainline around 70-71.

I dunno about all that @Blam... I haven't experienced any chain drop or loss in shifting performance on the 12spd Shimano setup. I also don't believe the profile is asymmetric on the Wolftooth Drop-ST chainring. I took some time looking at it before installing it and while there are alternating tooth profiles, each tooth is symmetric (front/rear).

Anyway, that's my two-cents.

i cant tell a difference either looking at it....but all 3 companies told me it shouldnt work for shimano HG+

reading the faqs on WT website, they state the 11 and below speed is asymmetric and the 12sp is flippable and symmetric....so everyone is getting their stuff mixed up?

It works for me... Sunrace 12spd shimano cassette, Deore chain, Wolftooth drop-st chainring flipped, Deore RD and XT shifter.

alright got everything shipped and finally installed.
BSA100 RF BB - 2 spacers DS, 1 spacer NDS
RF 170mm spindle - 1,5mm spacer each side
RF turbine 165mm cranks
wolftooth CAMO spider with -3 offset (+3 chainline)
wolftooth CAMO chainring

the chainline looks to be very close to stock. im measuring 75 +/-1mm frm the drainage hole assuming its centered.

cranks themselves as others mentioned a little on the tighter side but clears with what i feel is good enough clearance. on the low end, about 6.5mm clearance to the chainstay. at the pedals, just over 7mm.

hopefully will have a chance to ride it this weekend. thanks everyone for the help!!

unreleated, also installed some 45nrt wrathlordes in 275 x 4. the wrathchild/dillinger combo i had in 4.5 were just too wide and i dont need the float. wanted more rear grip and a smaller tire profile (4.5s barely fit my rack and its a pain to mount)
