Hi everyone. Need buying advice. I turn 50 in May and I thought what better way to celebrate that milestone than to build the ultimate (in my own mind anyway) light short travel trail bike/ down country bike. I'm looking for something that is a great trail ripper but could also do long endurance races if I get that hair again. I'd like to build from the frame up and would like to keep the weight in the 25-26 pound range with pedals and cage. What do you guys like these days? I'm coming from a 21 trek top fuel. Am looking at the new iteration of that frame but I'm open to suggestions. What should I be looking at? For reference, I live on the central coast of California but I do go to the Sierras quite a bit. Budget.. I'd like to be under 10k. As an aside, as I'm writing this I'm thinking I could buy a Rolex but the idea of spending 10k on a watch seems dumb but 10k on a bike is a sound financial decision.

So you want a trail ripper, that can also work for endurance races?

And you already have a Top Fuel? What exactly are you hoping to improve/change about the Top Fuel?

My gut says something like a Spur, Element, or maybe even Smuggler, with a fancy set of Berd wheels would get you most of the way there in terms of weight, assuming the rest of the build kit is relatively good. And while the Spur/Element might be good DC bikes that can marathon, the Smuggler is a bit more than that. Although, reportedly doesn't weigh all that much more than the Spur...

Curious what a depreciation value for a 10k Rolex is like…

Bikes are fun and all, I owned a 10k dream build from 10 yrs ago that now I have a hard time selling for 1.5 k. Standards changed, geometry changed.

But to each their own.

As for bike, S Work Epic.

Rolex is one of the few watch brands that is almost guaranteed to appreciate, funnily enough.

A, say, $10k Hublot depreciates almost as fast as a MTB.

I loved my top fuel except for one thing. A long time ago I destroyed my shoulder and had reconstructive surgery. The result aside from constant pain and arthritis my left arm is now 3/4 of an inch shorter than my right arm. I bought a large and really tried to get that bike to fit. I tried to find a M/L but there wasn't one around. I should have waited. So there wasn't anything wrong with the bike, I just couldn't get comfortable after about an hour of riding. So it just sat not being ridden. For this next bike, I will make sure my fit is 100% dialed.

I have looked at the reviews of the spur but have yet to throw a leg over one. If they are at Sea Otter this year I will try to demo one.

I'd probably go Pivot M4SL or Specialized Epic 8. I have both and am well over your limit in both and both are excellent and would be at a few thousand less. The other suggestion that I would have made is the Trek Top Fuel though.

10k rolex depreciated nicely if you have to ask.

If you have Supercaliber, I'd go with GMT-Master II, Green fluted Dayjust and then with Spesh Epic.
Maybe get gravel bike as well? I had Canyon Grizl with Rudy fork and it's hella fun on 50c tires.

I'd be looking at SST or Phantom as a metal enthusiast, but I suspect you prefer carbon, in which case SC Tallboy and Revel Ranger seem like solid options for the category. Good luck!

My SST is definitely a dream build, but even though it's built light, it's nowhere near this weight goal :)

I love my SC, but the VPP bikes aren't exactly light. Would require some very light component/wheel choices to get a Tallboy down to the 26lb range. My top 3 that fit the OPs description are:

Allied BC40
Yeti ASR
Spec Epic 8 (Evo?)

Ya, those two were my personal choices for this style of bike. I don't mind a little extra frame weight, don't race, and prefer metal.

I actually think the Ryve is a great fit if OP wants a DC bike that can be suitable for endurance races. Spots pedal great; I have a buddy who even races a Mayhem 130.
