My local trails used to be quite chill. I.e., not too many man made jumps.

That has gradually changing since Covid and literally all segments have at least one man made jump…

I’m at the time in my life where I’m quite risk averse… I’d like to learn to jump. But one bad crash, and my entire family would be screwed…

Anyway, how much of a wuss bag am I, since my family commitments prevent me from riding all of the modern, fun looking features? I do love living vicariously through locals on the jumps.

Sounds like you’re not comfortable in your jumping abilities. Maybe attend some jump workshops

I was stabbed 5-6 times. When I was 16.

"Give me the stereo or I'll stab you."

I'll admit, he had conviction.

Fortunately, he lacked knife skills.

I was stabbed AT 5-6 times. He ripped my trenchcoat and gave me a thinline scratch barely deeper than the average unkempt thumbnail would cause.

Now?

I'd scream like a little kid watching [horror movie franchise of user's choice]. And beg them to leave me intact.

Don't let a fun time ruin a grand time.

But maybe start with some baby air?

Im not the best jumper at all. But it is fun. DV has some new jump lines with pretty decent size jumps. I shouldnt be pushing learning this skill at 45.

Watch Friday Fails on Pinkbike and see most catastrophic crashes are on jumps.

But a sick whip is my fav trick. I wish I could whip more than a foot or so. Even that feels like a major whip though haha

I’m nearly 50 years old and have a needy family.
I’m self employed with a high deductible insurance policy.
1-2 feet high is my comfortable jump or drop max,
Table tops and small drops are okay.

BUT, hell no am I hitting gap jumps at this age,
Just no.

Do what you are comfortable with, and be happy with your decision!

As mentioned attend some classes / workshops on jumping. Not only will they correct bad form but they can also teach you how to fall / bail (@ least the class I went to did). Nothing wrong with watching video's and starting out small but if your form is off you may be able to hit smaller jumps but the bigger jumps will eat your poor form.
