I have to admit, in the past three decades as a journalist, I've mostly ignored the "bikes are too expensive" comment. I somehow considered bikes to be like automobiles. Some are cheap, some are reasonable and some ar exotic and out of reach. But in the last few years, the cries about these bike prices have only gotten louder. And as many bike companies struggle this year, the most common comment I hear is "You get what you deserve." Also, not only mass consumers (aka civilians), and motorcycle enthusiasts are complaining. Now, hardcore enthusiasts, aka 'lifer cyclists' are expressing the same views. So I felt compelled to research the subject and scratch below the surface of high bike prices.
In the video, I outline over a dozen reasons why mountain bike prices are so high. I also compare the motorcycle industry to expose the glaring contrast between the motorcycle and mountain bike pricing structure. At the end of the day though, I state the #1 reason mountain bike prices are so high is because we let them exist, covet them, and buy them. Enough that every brand has a bike costing over $10,000.
There are new developments in the mix though such as this current market correction, a stable mountain bike platform, e-bikes that don't need to shave grams, and the emerging Direct To Consumer model. Check out the video and chime in with your thoughts.
