unless it makes the racing more exciting, which would be good!
I think it will. The hype surrounding his presence will be one element that will make the lead-in to the races more exciting (similar to how it is when Pidcock shows up) and the other is that he has a pretty successful track record (ok minus the last few) which his power profile compliments. I'm looking forward to it anyways

I have no idea how MVDP's compensation works but didn't he sign a 10 year deal with Canyon this past spring? I imagine they love having him tearing it up all year on their bikes, across disciplines. Storming the spring classics then a run at the MTB circuit for the summer seems like a pretty solid advertising campaign. Especially given his chances of winning.

About 4-5 years ago they actually brought out a video, showing him racing on the three bikes......

I imagine they'd love to see him back on the MTB. They have the women's XCO World champion, Pieterse, plus Lecomte - and on the men's side Sam Gaze & Luca Horsepower are their main riders.

Even though LL is (apparently) set to leave Canyon CLLCTV for BMC, having Puck, Sam, Luca and MvDP in a race is a ton of star power. Plus, MvDP would ot have to fight much through the field him being Gravel World Champ.

Also we can pretty much confirm Jenny Rissveds to Canyon. This picture was posted by Simon Andreassen and you can see SRAM drivetrain, time pedals, and what looks like a "C" (for Canyon) on the downtube with the canyon paintjob we've seen some other riders on

Good catch

MVDP may just race the MTB Worlds, not the whole XCO calendar. Apparently because he doesn’t really enjoy the Tour and the Road Worlds course doesn’t suit him.

Simon posted his ride on Strava...and Jenny is also linked in the ride.

I have always been told that road bike racing at the elite levels is considerable more lucrative for the athletes than whose who's racing careers are entirely involved in the dirt. Was I misinformed?
You’re completely correct as a generalization, but MvdP is on a massive 10-yr contract just signed this year, and the team isn’t going to cut his salary if they jointly decide on a program for 1 of those years that has more MTB and no TdF. His value at the TdF is limited anyhow. Maybe some screen time and commentator mentions, possibly hunt for a stage and do a few sprint lead outs. That’s it.

On the flipside, MvDP is monster on Classics and one day races, except maybe LBL or Lombardia. Those monuments do pack a punch for a Classics focused team.

That's the whole point here. MvdP is a unicorn. He's the only rider in the world who can justify a contract paying multi-millions annually without being a GT contender. The team - in combination with its sponsors such as Canyon - has 10 years to figure out how to leverage that asset best.

Ineos thought they had another in Pidcock and set him up with a contract accordingly, but it was an overreach. As a multi-discipline cyclist, Pidcock is really, really, really good but he's still not in MvdP's league except in XCO.

He thinks he’s better at the classics? He “lost his sprint?”

I like watching Pidcock, but I always thought he’d become the next Alberto Contador, a stage racer specialized in scampering up the mountain stages.
I don't think even Pidcock has found what he is best at.

Win XCO races like there is no one else even close. That man is built for XCO.

For road racing just lets hope he get his shot. That Ineos team need better riders to give a person a realistic chance. Sepp Kuss and WvA in front of Pidcock and my guess is that he would be able to get a couple or more stage wins.
