Always on the lookout for 6mm offset rings i picked this up at the bike recyclery, fiddling with itOmg its so ornate!

Sure ive handled chainrings before but the milling on this is absurd. Those thick ridges. Wow its neat.

what even is ‘blackbox’?

i want to install it and ride on it even though my current ring is fine.

Probably the way to sell these is to have them out on the counter (wired anti theft cord) because i bet many cant resist once theyve seen one with their hands.

clearly a shape like that is good for a bunch of watts!!!

Was surprised dinking around with this thing in the car and realized the care and pride that went into it. I’d love to read an article about the people that made it. To me it’s a chainring but then look at it it’s a flamboyant piece of art. And ‘black box’, that means something to someone, and I find it on a peg in the back of the recyclry. Was there a time when having ‘black box’ printed on your chainring added value?

I imagine there was a marketing director, and a guy running some cad program, a set of proposed designs, a meeting, some prototypes… this particular chainring is remarkable. Current eagle doesn’t look like this, doesn’t trap mud. I’d love to read stories about how this sausage was made. The details on this piece are really over the top and in my mind unnecessary but it is at least competent (unlike overmachined monsters from cannondale and magic motorcycle.)

So many of these stories are hidden by advertising, and maybe the bitterness of the many underpaid people that work in the bike industry.

Fastidious detail in Every. Single. Part. Incremental gains are an expression of our need to move forward. My vice is oogling high end cassettes, I even make others hold a new one and look closely at the intricate work that went into engineering and then making it. Expensive? Hell yeah, Obsessive? Beyond our comprehension.
