Do you love Hoot? Let the Tahoe National Forest know about it!
The US Forest Service is proposing to make substantial changes to Hoot Trail including reducing berms and eliminating rollers and other trail features. If you value Hoot Trail, they need to hear from you.
Please provide your comments via email to District Ranger Tom Parrack at thomas.parrack@usda.gov and Forest Supervisor Beth Martinez at
elizabeth.martinez@usda.gov
Tell them why you love Hoot, a fun story from the trail, or why you think it should remain unchanged.

Not that I have seen. Just the info posted on social media by BONC, Hoot Trail and Tour of Nevada City bike shop. All reputable sources.
Certainly reputable. But hard to comment on proposed changes without knowing what's proposed.

I see BONC's IG post, but nothing from TONC or Hoot

The downside to this whole thing is I'm sure they have got some fuel to thier fire because of the recent fatality. I sent an email to the people noted in the Hoot Trail post. Hopefully everyone reading this has too.
More the reason to share the info with the parties involved about the nature of Hoot being a great trail for someone advancing their skills without the level on consequence of some of the newer trails, as their perspective is probably "you have lots of other MTB trails to ride in NC".

According to some folks involved with those trails, this push back is led by an equestrian group--with a ranger on their side. They aren't happy with the influx of mountain bikers to the area and want mtb features removed from the trails.
Wondering if this ends up happening, will it stop with just Hoot? I am all for horse trails, just think it is about time that they organize and put in the work themselves. Then again, they are the type of folks who want to enjoy the outdoors riding the labors of others backs. (pun intended)

My understanding is that all the new stuff is with a different land manager or something like that. I could be wrong but I remember hearing that's why they were able to get them to be bike only and not multi-use. But when Hoot was proposed the only way they could get it approved was to be Multi-use. At this point, I don't see why they would spend the money to flatten Hoot, when they could just push another trail through that's more fun for horse people and just separate the traffic.

I've ridden Hoot and all the other trails up there about 30 times in the past five years and I've never seen one horseback rider.

Spotted a truck and a horse trailer once and of course the poop pile calling cards but never a human riding on the back of a horse.

Many street legal dirt bikes riding around on some legal OHV trails (I think) but the horse people feel the need to smash a super fun but short multi use trail.

These folks chap my hide!

I would park near the market and ride up to Talon Show. Then hit Shimmer and Permagrin. Then Cheeseburger to Scott’s and then up the road back to the market. If you still have energy, ride a Hoot lap or two.
I would not recommend sending people off on permagrin without confirming the kind of Rider They are. Lots of fun stuff in the Nevada City area, but that is kind of next level for a lot of people with mandatory gaps and jumps in the trees.
