I ordered a closeout Deore groupset from Planet Cyclery before it shut down and it was supposed to come with Deore 6100 levers/Deore 6120 4-piston calipers. Neither the levers or calipers say "Deore" on them and they are more of a matte finish. The part numbers are correct on the levers/calipers however.

I have another set of 12 speed Deore brakes (6100 levers/6100 2-piston calipers) that actually say "Deore" on them with a shiny finish. See the attached pick with the Planet Cyclery lever on the right. Both sets came OEM packaged.

So the question is, did Planet Cyclery sell me fake brakes?

It looks like one of the m6100 lever variants pictured on the Shimano site. I assume it's different because some allow for a shifter lever to be mounted to the brake, while other variants require the use of a shifter with a separate clamp: https://bike.shimano.com/en-AU/product/component/deore-m6100/BL-M6100.html

These are both I-SPEC. I've not seen "Deore" kit come without the "Deore" name on it. I've seen plenty of non-series Shimano labeled this way, which is what got me concerned someone silkscreened perhaps a non-series part with the 6100 part number.

Shimano for over a decade (since m596 deore) has been releasing non-deore series but in fact real deore level brakes with slightly different finish. Eg m615 deore came with silver reservoir cap vs. shining black compared to non-series m615 brakes. These are fine and perfectly in line with their current offerings.

I mean, does it matter? The real shimano brakes will eventually puke their main cylinder seal and won't be repairable and they'll weep out through the caliper seals. At least with fake ones, they might not?

Or not. I run XT and XTR on all my bikes and my newest set is at least 4 years old, oldest set is probably over 10 years old. All still work great across my 4 bikes.

Wasn't the issue with some of the newer ones? That said, I have a pair of XT brakes from 2012 still going strong to this day. Never an issue with them.... 1000's of miles through some of the harshest Colorado terrain and all I had to do was occassionally change pads and oil.

it’s ok. Not everyone understands profit/manufacturing.
Correct, you don’t understand manufacturing. There are counterfeits/knockoffs of many bike parts. The companies making them understand profit and manufacturing more than you because obviously they can not only manufacture the counterfeit but also profit from it. There are massive factories in China making all kinds of knockoff goods. Copying a design is quite easy. They make the same parts cheaper by using cheaper materials. They don’t care if the parts fail, they aren’t going to warranty the parts. You must be one of those that think everything being sold in Aliexpress is legit.

Orders brakes on clearance from a company going bankrupt, seems surprised when the brakes he receives aren't top quality.
