For any of you out there wanting something a bit different this summer, the Korea Epic Ride is happening in early June, from Chuncheon, in the center of the peninsula, out to the coast. The event is run as a brevet, it's not a race, and the emphasis is on locals and expats having an event to take part in to test their gear as well as build experience for larger international events.

The event organizer is a well-known local guy here in Korea who's very keen on bikepacking, getting out there in the recent snow for overnighters etc. He speaks English, but also, there is a decent expat riding scene here and I know a couple of them at least will be starting the event. Should you want to come to Korea in early June, ride the event and maybe do a small tour, there is a lot of support available and locally-based riders to ride with.

To be transparent, I'm just trying to get the word out as a favor to the organizer, there's no money involved here. It's free to enter the event, although you can make a small donation if you like and it's as grassroots as you'll find anywhere. Maybe not an entirely polished event, but one with a lot of spirit and its own charm.

Read a report of an early edition here. You'll see they had a lot of rain, and that's why it's starting on June 9th this year, avoiding the rainy season that starts late in the month.

You can register here. There are about 60 spots left, and if they all go, registration will be closed before April 30th, the final day to sign up.

Thanks for posting about the Korea Epic Ride, it sounds like a fantastic event. I'm really interested in visiting South Korea, but joining the ride this year may not be possible due to my work schedule. However, I've been reading more about touring the country and it seems beautiful with a lot of natural scenery and history as per this tourism guide Tourism In South Korea Statistics 2023: All You Need to Know

Maybe I can plan a shorter trip outside of the bikepacking event dates to explore places like Seoul, Jeju Island or along the coastal trails. I'll definitely keep the event in mind for future years though as I'd love to experience multi-day bike rides there.
Lots of resources available if you decide to come over.

One of the popular ones is Korea Cycling Community, a group on Facebook:

Okay, this event's happening again in 2025. Things like this take time, planning and saving, so I'm posting here again. Kiseok Uhm, the organizer, has been out there planning the route for 2025.

There will be 700 km and 300 km courses. They're largely mountain gravel doubletrack, fire roads, mixed with paved connectors. Small rural roads in country South Korea, but there should be some singletrack as well. There will be a day route in 2025, as well as a 1,000 km road route, for the first time.

The riding is real adventure riding, but TBH, in Korea you're never all that far away from a well-stocked convenience store and small village with at least one cheap motel, if you run into rain or pull a hamstring, or even just need a shower. Like I said in the original post, there's a strong expat and Korean riding scene here in Korea, meaning there's an established help network for international riders to access, so anyone flying in for the event wouldn't be left to fend entirely for themselves! I know there's at least one expat starting the ride in 2025, and there will probably be more as the months go on. If Korea's on your radar, this is a great way to get in some forest riding, or do an alternative brevet.

Date's locked in now and things are all go for June. Still 7-8 months out, but that's good for savings and preparations. As ever, look through the above and reach out via the links here or DM me if you need more info.
