2023 Race Tire thread

The more I've ridden the Mezcal, the less I like it. It's fast but sketchy on loose over hard. Unless you are super careful with your break modulation, the rear end drips out easily. I've had no complaints about the Fast Trak though as a rear tire, I prefer the Renegade.

Regarding the new Vittoria tires, I've got about 1000 miles on the 2.4 Peyotes and more than that on the 2.4 Mezcals in XC Race casing. A couple notes:
  1. The new XC race casing is completely different from past iterations, I'd never trust it here in NW Arkansas but the new XC Race casing/compound is way more durable and they've engineered some sort of increased suppleness/compliance despite going from 120tpi to 60tpi. No, it doesn't make sense, yes it's noticeably more damped (you feel everything on a carbon hardtail)
  2. The slight increase on the Mezcal from 2.35 to 2.4 (yes it's actually different per my calipers not just marketing) combined with the new compound lets me run the Mezcal as a front tire where normally my skills didn't allow that.
  3. The Peyote is fast AF, like semi slick levels of straight line speed but doesn't seem to give up much if anything in the corners to the Mezcal.
  4. Peyote braking/climbing traction is really good with all the effective edges I guess, just get the pressure right. I'm 80kg and running 17ish front and 18ish rear, insert in rear only.
  5. I only have 200-300mi with a front Peyote but I was surprised how well it hooked up just looking at it.
Those are my thoughts/experiences with the new ones from the perspective of a midpack dad, YMMV.

Thanks for the review. Regardless of ability, attesting to durability on the machine-built shards of NW Arkansas is a great endorsement. They tore my Pirellis to smithereens.

Lots of great, wide semi-slicks to choose from these days. Peyote looks like a good one.

Son will be XC racing in the rain this Sunday. Rocks roots and clay. How Barzo in that situation? I just bought two XC-Trail in 29x2.35 to put on his bike. Had to put the rear on right away as he slashed his Rekon Race 2.4WT. Front has a 2.6 Dual Compound Gen 1 Forekaster that's just shy of 1kg. Should I just keep that on there or go ahead and put the new Barzo on there?

Barzo's good, but Rocket Ron is heroic in mud.
