I cut down two extra large Vitoria tire inserts to fit two together for my 80mm wide fat bike rim. When switching out tires, I saw that the part of the insert I cut is soaking up sealant.

I wanted to see if there is a way to stop this. I first thought maybe a blow-torch type of lighter to singe the cut parts. But not sure how flammable the inserts are?

Also thinking maybe using an old iron on the cut side?

Before I try one or both of these anyone have some thoughts or advise?

Thanks!

Its waterproof coating prevents the absorption of sealant

sealant sucking will happen if you find a way to iron or melt it... as the coating is compromised

once sliced, sealant sucking can't be stopped w/o adding a lot of weight

I don't understand this waterproof coating explanation. How do the regular ones not absorb sealant (or do they?)? You have to cut the end to fit the rim and then re-join with a zip tie, plus another hole for the valve.

Yeah, not sure I understand this either. I thought there was something about closed cell foam that needed to be used to keep sealant from soaking in. I had thought that meant all of the foam was closed cell so wouldn’t matter if cut like when you cut it to size or what I did.

I will check the ends for sealant being soaked up as well.

I like the idea of maybe glueing the two together.

I don't know
that coating info came from Vittoria website
maybe they are talking about a different version of liner when I looked it up

OK I found my problem, that is air liner ROAD that has a coating

MTB doesn't

The Air-Liner is compatible with all tubeless and tubeless-ready mountain bike tires and ammonia-free sealant.
