Anybody who has tried this have any feedback? I went with the hooked bead area carbon rim for the bigger bead hump. I'll be running them with CushCore which should help them seat easier...
I went hook bead. The tires are very tight. The cushcore I started with are too wide and I couldn't make it work, so no inserts for now. Once they seat, they are on there. Tubeless was as easy as it gets. Tape conforms easily, tire mounts easily for how tight they are, inflated tubeless without a compressor (which I credit to the taller hump of the hook bead style). They were perfectly true before lacing, but weren't perfectly true with perfectly even spoke tension. You might get a more consistent layup with hookless. I've been flirting with too low a tire pressure and have had a few rim strikes with no ill effects.Considering a unicorn purchase, but was thinking hookless or durability. How is your setup working?
No chance of blowing tires off these rims. It took like 45 psi plus alcohol lube and time to creep for the beads to hook (with a loud pop) on these. At zero psi they are hard to debead by hand. I am 250 lb and run about 23psi front, 26 rear. I get minimal rim strikes, but when I ride gnarlier trails, I take a different bike, and as a fat who rode long before parts were tough enough, I'm always careful about line choice.Theres a LOOONG thread on a uniccycle forum about blowing tires off at pressures over 30 psi but feels like a non issue for MTB. I run min at 21 front, 24 rear on Nimbus alum rims. Nimbus rims suck tubeless, have to do ghetto tubeelss and tire falls of bead if pressures get too low (when it sits for longer periods).
The nimbus rims are tanks and I've had some serious hard rim strikes, still not convinced that carbon would hold up but maybe I can run higher pressures and ride smoother
I also had a Dorado for a bit that I shortened down to 80mm of travel. The lack of adequate offste though doesn't make handling great. I ride a lot of rocky trails and had some issues with torsional flex. Not a lot of options out there for suspension.
I didn't verify it, but I might still have useful info for you. What did you use for spokes on the Unicorn rims? Was the ERD 742mm listed on Nexties website accurate?
Assuming you did 32h 3 cross, yeah I'm coming up with about 364. You just using spokes from Unicycle.com? A LBS has a nice spoke machine that I've been considering getting the 380mm spokes and just have the LBS cut/thread to size.I used 14ga 367 spokes and DT350 big ride hubs.
Yes I just bought unicycle.com 14 gauge. I couldn't find any blanks that were long enough that were anything nicer. Well. Besides berd.Assuming you did 32h 3 cross, yeah I'm coming up with about 364. Do you also have a 36er?#TotesForgotAboutBerdWhenWeighing36erProCons
I really want a Walt's. Don't necessarily need it to be a serious bike. Walt knows 36ers. And I been curious for over a decade. Really, not a question of if, but when. Been drawing up the priority list.Do you also have a 36er?
The Nextie Unicorn rims are about half the weight of the best aluminum rims in the size. It's got to be huge. The best available tire is a vee T-Monster as spec'd by Walt. It is only a 2.25, and the rubber compound and construction are both skewed more towards durability than I'd like, but it still makes for a great bike with this tire. I spec'd a bb that is a hair too low for the chainstay length. If I had the budget, I'd go for berd spokes. If I had the time, I'd make a pair of 2.6 tire from 2x 27.5x3.0 tires.I really want a Walt's. Don't necessarily need it to be a serious bike. Walt knows 36ers. And I been curious for over a decade. Ya'll happen to know the state of the 36er tire market? Looks like carbon rims can be had. I'm on metal rims now. 36er makes the most compelling case for splashing out on a set of plastic.
Thank you for your time.
Are you yankin my bankin? Cause I haven't even emailed Walt yet. So I got time. But I got no skills. Are custom tires a service anyone provides? Are the resulting Frankenstires tubeless? If I had the time, I'd make a pair of 2.6 tire from 2x 27.5x3.0 tires.
I don't know of anyone offering custom tires. Back along there were makers of custom road tubulars. I was planning to use the same ammonia inhibited natural latex rubber as a bonding agent, and kevlar as a bead. I was planning on running them tubeless. Are you yankin my bankin? Noted. Thankee. You might want to get after Walt soon. If he keeps slipping further into retirement, pretty soon he won't take your order 🤣
Nice!I finally got my Unicorn wheelset built up. I went with the hookless rim for better impact resistance. Also got a new setup of T-monsters. They mounted up fairly easily, one tire has a pretty wonky wire bead and took some finagaling and lots of soapy water to get it to mount up. Tire went solidly onto bead and it stays there even at zero pressure. Have one ride under my belt at 25 psi front, 30 psi rear and no issues with burping or leakage. Looking promising as long as I can keep from destroying the Unicorns on rocks![]()
