If I ever do end up in Flagstaff, I'll be out there building with you guys/ girls. This is what I miss with Big Bear, there was a time when we went out and designed, marked and built trails. Big Bear no longer allows trail building, although the San Bernardino National Forest is the most heavily used national forest in the country.

That would be contrary to the Forest System Trails Stewardship Act to engage with partners. 10-Year Trail Shared Stewardship Challenge | US Forest Service

They do prefer to partner with clubs or non-profits rather than individual community members with a gazillion individual volunteer agreements. Perhaps that was the issue?

No not at all. We were active board members with the Big Bear Trails Foundation (Council) which worked directly with the USFS. We would meet once a month, we had training for trail building, trail hosting and sustainability. I was on the board to about two years ago when I started seeing the writing on the wall, the FS was making it harder and harder to even touch the trails, even maintaining the trails which we built. As of now, most board members have followed suit and left as well. Even the salaried Trails Coordinator, which is a good friend of mine left.
It's really sad to see this happening. We had potential trails routes marked out and had environmental studies done for several miles of trails and all of has been scraped.

Ya, there's nothing on the sopa for trails. Bummer. Schedule Of Proposed Action - 07/01/2023 to 09/30/2023 - San Bernardino National Forest

Back to our regular programming, Apollo may open today. Just some finish work on both ends.

Sure feels to me like @Hurricane Jeff DNGAF about the integrity of this thread topic... IMO, his persistent derails belong in another thread... In the So Cal forum, perhaps.

Otherwise, the tread-work on Apollo is impressive. Nice little connector, lots of rock got moved... just wish it had made contact with RR on a higher contour... Alas, the stupid impassible eastbound RR waterfall feature still abides.

Rocky Ridge might get a facelift in 2024 but the compromise with a certain environmental group was that all trails as part of the Schultz stacked loop be located east of the hiking trail Lost Burrito.

Apollo was finished today and is signed and open to the public. That's the last trail planned for 2023 as part of the Schultz stacked loop system.

Rockman -- What is the intended biking directions on the Elden Stacked Loop system? If I am using Big Bang generally to descent from the top of Dry Lake are Apollo , Dipper and Pluto really downhill directional best or are they worth climbing? I am thinking about coming down big bang and hitting some of these "stacked loop" trails also, but not sure if and are cut more for climbing or climb friendly.

None of the trails in the Schultz stacked system favor a direction except for Pluto. Dipper climbs really well but is also a fun downhill. If you want to keep the flow going from Big Bang then take the first left on Space Walk and then a left on Dipper. However, Space Walk is a really nice contouring loop around the 2nd bench (parasitic dacite lava dome to the main dome (Dry Lake Hills)) so if you don't mind a bit more climbing then take the 2nd left onto Space Walk and hang a right on Pluto to finish on Dipper. Consider climbing back up and doing another lap in the other direction on Space Walk to get a full Dipper Down. The first part of Dipper along the cliff wall is really fun and fast and has a bit of a Tahoe Rim Trail feel. Hard to go wrong really and the views are stunning. As for Apollo, it's really just a connector to Rocky Ridge to add more connectivity.

All that said, finishing out on Big Bang is pretty rad too.

The threat of rain didn't scare the 30+ folks that showed up today to continue the build on the new climb 3 singletrack!

RM,

With all the amazing trail adds this year, I overlooked the new Climb 3 work. Rode up Schultz to Lower Sunset not too long ago and wished for another way to get up to the top of Upper Brookbank and this will be it. Any word on progress? Thanks!

New Climb 3 is good-to-go, in my inexpert opinion, and well worth the effort in either direction.

I always like that lower sunset descent, fast, shady and cool, with a few launches.
