Thank you all for the good Intel, will definitely keep this in mind as my search for the next bike continues. Sounds like I may have been wrong about needing to switch to a FS bike. Staying in the HT world does open up a ton of options. I guess I need to get out and demo some bikes.

It's been a trend over the past year+ , prices too good to be true, 1 or 2 items for sale, zero sold items and a name like this ThomasQgj5EZ. 99% of the scammers I've seen in this time have these type of 6 digits/ letters not making sense after their name.<< This scammer today posted a new X01 cassette for $230. I immediately flagged him as a scammer and his account has since been removed.
Not saying they weren’t a scammer but bike closet has a XO1 cassette on sale for $250 (currently out of stock tho). Still have the XX1 (10-50t) for $299.

Having bought and sold several bikes on Pinkbike, here’s my advice:

  • Account must be more than a month old, and have sold many items, or be good at communication.
  • Be careful in cross borders sales. I like to only buy from established sellers across borders as I’ve had too many things lost or take weeks or sales fall through when sellers realize the cost of shipping.
  • Expect the bike to be in worse condition than advertised. People inevitably tolerate shortcomings on their bikes they don’t even notices
  • Expect to change bearings for FS bikes
  • Expect fork to not have been serviced
  • Expect to change chain and grip
Red flags
  • Relatively new user
  • Has several bikes in different sizes
  • If seller has multiple bikes, check to see if backgrounds match
  • Is asking just slightly less than bike is probably worth
  • Asks for zelle or venmo
  • Offer to pick up bike and they suddenly live in a different city
  • Wont post specific pictures of bike (I like to ask for closeup of brake calipers to “check for leaks” and what fittings it uses since most bikes will need a brake bleed anyway)

All that being said: Canyon has a few medium Neurons AL in stock, Rei has the Cannondale Habit and the Salsa Horsethief in stock, Call your local specialized dealer to see if they have a medium Status in stock, Jenson has a sick deal on a Marin as well as a Norco and maybe some others.

I really agree with @dompedro3, they give great advice. The bike is going to need lots of service and the parts are going to be in worse shape than you expect. Price that in.

If you pay with PayPal Good & Services, it should minimize your risk of them stealing your money.

For your lower back pain: I'd encourage you to see a physio, especially at 40. I'm 31 and I was experiencing similar back pain due to my hamstrings being tight. Working with a physio on them got me to be pain free.

I’d add to that:
  • get a work email address that works (verify on linkedin or other)
  • only pay to PayPal verified email address

I’ve bought and sold a ton of stuff on pinkbike and only ever had minor problems - one guy lied about brake condition (they we’re screwed).
