I went for a ride already this morning. Didn't miss a front derailleur. Looked at my road bike when I got home and realized I haven't had a triple in a very long time.

I'm not sure how we're all getting suckered into talking about this (again) when we could be outside riding whatever bike we like and not giving 2 craps about what the interwebs thinks.
thats what l did....

I'm rarely in the saddle for more than 3 hours at a time.

The only bike I'd want to have a front derailluer is on a touring bike where I am in the saddle 5+ hours.

The 1x drivetrains are more than sufficient for 99% of my rides. Simpler, stronger, quieter. Easier to maintain and troubleshoot. It's a dream really.

I don’t see the point in front derailleurs for mtb. I very rarely use all 12 gears in the 1x setup. I only used 1 in the front when I had a 2x or 3x because the transition was so bad when you switched on the front.

The reason they get used (on road, or by some xc pros) is to get a close range cassette, AND the end to end range for going up and down big hills. Secondary the 2x rings are marginally more efficient, but in a race of seconds this might matter to you.

For everyone else, they are pointless.

Horses for courses.

For some people pedalling as quickly and efficiently as possible everywhere is the point. That's the high they're chasing. They speak in milliseconds, watts, bpm and calories. More range might make sense for them.

I haven't done much all mountain style riding yet this season - mostly winch and plummet stuff and a bit of XC. By the looks of it, the bottom 6 cogs and a granny ring would do it for me, but normally there isn't much I can't get up or across comfortably on a 32/10-52.

I like the simplicity and reliability and I don't miss the benefits of having extra range, so I think that's the purpose.

Beautiful, expensive. Here is some ugly, with greater range, gears and chain for dollars in low double digits. This single pivot is smooth, little bob on no lockout coil, with room for a der and a dropper.

I really dont know what that is ( was ) and i searched it as well but didnt find anything .
In fairness, I don't remember what the real marketing name was. It was last gen 8s, first gen 9s. The derailleur cages was multi piece on pivots so it changed shape as it moved and "lifted" the chain off the rings. Best working front derailleur by far, but that's like saying colon is the best cancer.

It's called side swing most everywhere else - maybe Canadia calls it by its own name. Sounds like something you guys would do.
the side pull is this right ?

Even the tension of the main spring ( the spring that controlled the parallelogram ) was adjustable the angle ot that little pulley which led the cable in also could vary ................was for 1998 i think...... i had some of them from 2006 till even 2012

but the best cancer is brain cancer .....

Oh also reminded me of those multi pivotet V-Brakes......

What people don't realize: it's a trend, marketing, and a belonging thing by now.

The physical reality: no more noise from chain banging derailleur. Free up bar space. Easier to clean the bike. Rear sus design freedom.

I like 1x for MTB and there are no downsides for the riding I do.
I went 1X in 1989 because of weight weenie issues. Losing the rings, FD, shifter, cable and housing, several chain links and five chainring bolts was a big thing for me. Plus I was 18 and didn't know pain yet.

Yes, that is side swing. horrible abomination from 11s.

That derailleur is among the worst sadly (for xtr). reverse pull was weird, but not really bad. The construction of that derailleur though was horrific. Floppy wobbly mess. Same for m950/952 as well. Big let down for XTR that whole set of groups was except maybe the cassette.

M900 was the best rear. Although, if you need to be fully honest about this stuff... brand new alivio m3000 shift much better - it just wont last as long.
