For the first time in a long time I actually have a selection of tires to choose from depending on terrain or weather, mud or dry. I swapped some Minions onto my sons bike a couple of weeks ago. They are about 1 1/2 years old and have been on and off our bikes several times since they were new. The tread is still really good. While we were taking a break on a ride I looked down at his bike and noticed his front DHF was cracking along the side knobs all the way around the tire on both sides. Checked the back tire a DHR, it was doing the same thing just not quite as bad as the front. Just curious if anyone has noticed this? Am I expecting tires to last too long sitting on a shelf waiting to be used?
Years ago, like 20 plus years I had several different sets tires I would swap around between the old semi slicks for CC races and my "beefier" tires for just trail riding and never noticed this back then. Just curious, I don't want to invest in extra tires anymore if "dry rot" cracks are a normal thing after a year or so.

I have a massive tire quiver/pile and any time i switch them out (not retire) i try and clean it and then spray it with tire-wet or that tire spray for cars and store them inside and off the ground. I find it helps keep them softer and just better. Be curious if this stuff is good or bad for bike tires? I asked a guy at the Maxxis booth at a gravel race once and he did not have much insight (said "yea why not" but this was at the end of a long expo day) My old housemate raced Pro DH and he and all his DH bro's used this stuff citing keeping them grippy, happy and strong.
Its funny because roadies and especially CX racers have been know to age their tires (tubulars) a season or two.
I have found that some brands age better than others with Maxxis and Kenda cracking and getting harder/drying early, where vittorias (my fave brand now), schwables, conti's, challange and others stay soft.

This is just what Maxxis tires do if you corner hard. I haven't worn down the center tread ever, it's always the side knobs that are their demise.

I'm exploring brands beyond Maxxis and Schwalbe for longer side knob life. I've read that Conti, Specialized and WTB (in that order) have the best life in their soft and super-soft compounds. I'm trying WTB now, too soon to tell but I don't love the weird/limited options they offer for compound/casing/tread. Tires are good when you find the right combo for your bike and soils. Definitely a Cali not a PNW brand.
