I live in northeast LA and usually ride Cherry Canyon, Glendale Sports Complex and other foothill area trails. I’d rate my skills as fair to middling. Still getting into shape. Do well on blue trails. I’ve watched some videos of single track riding in/around Simi Valley and like the looks of the wide-open, flowy stuff. Was considering driving up the Saint Ronald Reagan Fwy and riding Chivo Cyn up/Marr Ranch down.

Is it worth the trip (GPS says it’s under 45 minutes)? Has anyone ridden there recently? I read some old reviews that refer to lots of trash and homeless encampments, which I’d prefer to avoid. Any tips on where or where not to park? Any better suggestions for something under say eight miles total?

Thanks in advance!

Last I was at Rocky Peak in Simi there were a few ruts, but builders may have done work since then. For blue trails, Johnson's is really fun, and Chumash is good. A good loop would be to climb Rocky Peak fire road from the east, ride down Chumash, loop over on surface streets to find the west end of Rocky Peak, ride it east to Johnson's and then back to the car.
If you want to also try a black trail, start with Hummingbird, it is the most mellow option

Thanks very much for the suggestions.
At this point, I’ll only ride black trails if I’m with someone more experienced. I’ll be alone so blue it is!

I've only been riding the fire roads around there lately, but that area got a significant amount of water so expect a lot of ruts on the singletrack. I haven't been on the singletrack since the rains, but Las Llajas fire road was badly damaged, so I would expect the singletrack to be in worse shape. The fixed the fire road about a month ago.

I haven't seen many homeless on those trails. I have seen 1 or 2 two sleeping in the area, but not by the trail.

A little closer is Woolsey Canyon, just west of Chatsworth. With the road its a relatively easy climb back to the top to do multiple sessions. Quite a range of routes for various riders from mega jumps and drops to challenging trails for mortals.

I just rode Chivo Canyon today and last week. Singletrack is fine, with some small ruts, but nothing that will impede you. However there are some areas that are overgrown with mustard. Downhill is fast and flowy - a bit bumpy/loose in some spots, but nothing major. No trash or homeless. I park at Las Llajas trailhead and ride Evening Sky Bypass to get to Chivo Canyon.

Park at Las Llajas trailhead:

Use Entrada to get to Evening Sky Bypass. https://www.trailforks.com/trails/entrada-332754/

Evening Sky Bypass https://www.trailforks.com/trails/evening-sky-bypass/

At the end of Evening Sky Bypass, (once you cross on the pipes - you'll understand when you see it), hang a right, then follow the concrete drainage ditch on the left to get to Chivo Canyon.

When you get to the fireroad at the bottom of Marr just turn left and then a right after the gate to get back to the trailhead.

Have fun!

Never have. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve wanted to try Sheep Corral for a while now. Just watched a recent video and it looks pretty beat up and overgrown. I’m gonna guess that’s the case everywhere in the area given all the rain we had.

Yes it is overgrown and I handle that by slowing down a bit. Its in bloom now and the giant oaks are glowing green. Super pretty place to ride in the Spring.

I rode Rocky Peak stuff last week. Chumash is a nightmare, super roughed up in the upper section. Johnson was a blast always. Water flowing across the FR on the Las Llajas climb.

Sheep's corral is pretty rutted right now. Hopefully it will be seeing some maintenance soon.
