Mmmm... That doesn't sound very good...

Probably I'm rather lucky, with no flats on my Rush Pro TR's and Booster Pro TR's (the TR are more vulnerable than the SCT).

Then again, I only ride forest trails with only some tiny rocks here and there.

Maybe the Pirelli Scorpion XC RC are suitable for your kind of terrain?
 
Awe.....you burst my bubble. Was thinking this would be a great tire for upcoming Pedaler's Bash and Noon to Moon. What lightweight tire do you suggest for Bentonville?.....or as light as you would dare for the sharp edges etc?

Run tires under 700g in Bentonville at your own risk. I'm running Syerra/Mezcal for Pedalers Bash, did Syerra/Syerra last year in the rain and zero issues. I'm partial to Vittoria but you want the following with any brand:
  • reinforced sidewalls
  • 700g+
  • minimal open space between lugs especially on rear to keep razors from finding the casing
  • some siping/shaping of knobs to hold onto the gravel/rocks

Lots of people like the Pirelli XCRC 2.4 Pro wall and Maxxis Rekon Race 2.35 EXO here too. I'd be interested to see how the new Renegade GRID casing fares here too.

I’ve been on the 2.3 CrossKing for a year.

Specialized has a good sale going on. I’ve seen people say they like the Fast Trak 2.35; how would you compare it to the CrossKing, if you’ve ridden both?

Out of curiosity, why are you looking to move from the Cross King?
I just installed a Fast Trak T7 and am pretty impressed with it. I can't compare it to a CK because I haven't ridden one yet, but it is tons more confidence inspiring than a Mezcal. It also seems to roll just as fast. Weight for a 2.35 was 705g but it came up a bit narrow at 2.28. We'll see if it stretches. My Renegade 2.3 was 2.28 when new and is currently 2.34 after a couple months of riding.

cross king protection….

Syerra seem soooo heavy.
I haven't run Contis here but the X King looks like a Barzo clone so it's probably solid option in their Protection casing. IIRC the 2.4 measures skinny not unlike the 2.35 Barzo.

Syerra is heavier than other options but a pair of them won me $100 last year for 3rd place in SS at Pedalers Bash, 2nd place SS was on Syerras too, as was 2nd place Open (well until till he got lost in Blowing Springs then DNF'd)...I went Mezcal rear this year because it's not going to be dumping rain this time so it's a little faster rolling.

I got a pint of Homewrecker IPA that says you'll see some EXO Rekon Races at the pointy end of the race, but Pedalers defending champ probably running 2.4 XCRC Prowall this weekend #insidertip

I run tr booster pro and have one flat I think in over a year, and have plenty of a variety of rocks roots etc... booster pro and 2 karma have been very good combo for me both in tr

I'm tempted to try some Fast Traks. I did a demo ride with some older Fast Traks on a previous generation Epic and got a personal record on the 13 mile trail. They rolled pretty good and had decent enough grip for my home trail. But that was 3 or 4 years ago so a couple generations ago of tire

Hell, I sliced the sidewall on a bonty SE5 the other day on Tunnel Vision. Bison Bike dude said to go higher on pressure on these trails than I typically run.

Good idea? Malarkey? After all, lightning does strike sometimes, no matter what.

Since then, I've logged a bunch of miles on the Back 40/Blowing Springs stuff on my xc bike with a RaRa rear tire and no issues...... :unsure:

You can cut DH casing here, at some point it's just a matter of time. I don't know if increasing pressure is necessarily the solution to sidewall slashes but YMMV.

Right through the main tread on a RaRa.

Half-speed with my wife on a section of Back 40 near Snowbird -- cool art, "Rock Man" FTW IMO -- that I had been over 3 times a few days ago with the same tire at full-tilt boogy.

Dammit!!!!!

Right through the main tread area is probably the most common punctures here, hence my recommendation for high knob density. Bead to bead protection or something like it with an extra breaker layer in the middle with fast rolling tread would be ideal, but nobody makes that yet...
 
I'd use a booster pro SCT with low pressure and a light tire insert for sharp rock course. Tight tread, still light and fast. SCT sidewall for low pressure. Too high pressure and open tread is a recipe for puncture on sharp rocks. You need the bigger volume and low pressure to conform around the rocks instead of trying to bounce off them. That's just me though...

Well....maybe that tire will exist in two years, when we'll likely be back to Bella Vista -- down to Prescott next April to cheer for some young friends at the Whiskey 50.

I like it. I'm this close to ordering a set of the new Vittoria xc light inserts or whatever they are actually called -- or maybe the PTNs.

I've been pretty happy with the insert life. The Tubolight inserts I've been using last year and this have been just enough of an insurance policy on the carbon hoops to pay for themselves. I had a tire explode last year and only lost the tire and the insert, despite rolling on the flat for a kilometer or so. The carbon rim rolled away unscathed.

Also, interesting ad copy for the Vittoria:
  • Durable polymer material has been tested to a projected life of 2000 hours under normal riding, or 1 full hour of run-flat downhill use under a typical rider
 
I'm on the Tubolights front and rear in 2.2s on 30mm Id rims. I like running lower pressure even on 2.2s and these inserts make it possible with as little downside.

In the past I had the old Vittoria airliners, and they provided a massive change to high volume tires, way more stability and a hugely damped ride for traction increase. I just hated the weight and how they would stretch over time requiring unmounting, cutting, re zipping, and then re mounting.

The new Vittoria xc insert looks like they addressed all of these concerns. I'd give them a try but I'm also stoked with the Tubolights.
