Pedal assist up to 20 mph. On flat ground, I tend to pedal around 14-15mph with full power. I have to gun it to hit 20mph and go back in time. Just be careful at 20mph. Ebikes can generate the 1.21 gigawatts to go back in time. That's how bike manufacturers from the future start their ebike empire. They ride a bike back in time, drop it off with their counterparts, and head back to the future on a tandem ebike.

I had the same question but not enough curiosity to search for the answer. For now, I’ll remain ignorant. Eventually I’ll have to learn about the different classes of ebikes.

The explanation of classes of E-bikes is like a couple of paragraphs, or less. Not hard.

We don't have much for ebikes on our trails so I've never bothered in the past to see what the issue is. But I can see why they will frustrate some people.

I have ridden the S-Works full suspension MTB. Wow, hit that button and touch the pedals it's like a rocket ship. I can see why people enjoy them. Sounds like you can "jail break" them to go even faster.

In a nutshell:

Class 1 - most eMTBs/e-gravel bikes w/ assist up to 20mph
Class 2 - typically city commuters - throttle input and some models w/ optional crank assist (Rad Power Bikes is an example); generally not legal on bicycle trail systems
Class 3 - some e-road/gravel bikes and mostly city commuters w/ assist up to 30mph

Since we are nit picking, that e-bike graphic above has "No age limit". I would prefer "No age restriction".

I believe Class 1 is also limited to 750W of boost. But speed is the more important limit, just like the speed limit for cars, as people can always hack to boost power.

Oh well .. you know ... I do not check these kilometer long threads very often ... and the MTBR linear format makes it impossible to figure where the discussion has gone ... so you go in circles! Interesting that such a simple trail sign makes such a splash.

[When it comes to class 1 or 2 or 3 trail bikes I ran into two class 2 today (maybe 3? who knows). BIG! and they did not seem to require much pedaling at all! Not sure if they are illegal yet but they are getting popular around here]
