I formulated my own sport drink mix 20+ years ago. At one point in time I had 4 different variations. When I run low on ingredients, I purchase a 50 lb bag of Maltodextrin and a 50# bag of Fructose. I still have a lot of maltodextrin, fructose, detrose and polydextrose in big vittle-vault containers, along with bulk containers of amino acids, salt, 5 pounds of citric acid, and 2 pounds of caffeine powder. Yummy!!!!

After reading this thread, I looked up the top sport drink mixes. I was surprised to see that Gu Rocane's ingredient list is almost exactly the same as my formulation, except they are adding Sodium Citrate, Taurine, Potassium Citrate, and White Tea (Leaf) Extract.
(I used to also make my own gel blends like Gu.)

These days, being in my 60s, my metabolism has slowed down so much that I will use my sport drinks typically on rides over 60 miles long. Eating regular food supplies the energy needs for most of the rides I do. On average, I use 4 to 6 pounds of my mix a year. I used to use around 12 to 15 pounds back in the day.

As far as I can tell, the list of ingredients hasn't changed much for sports drinks over the past 20 years.

Argh! I am finally running out of my last jar of Cytomax purchased in 2021 and am just now finding out that it's discontinued after Pepsi bought them. This bums me out, as I've been an avid user since 2002 or so, having used it in several XC and 24-hour races, as well as all my training rides. Guess I'm gonna have to try Clif or Gu now... Why are all these other drinks so damn expensive too? Like $2 for a 24 oz water bottle, WTH?

Clif Cranberry Razz has been discontinued now. I ordered some Tailwind Rasberry and will give that a go. I carry purified water in my hydration pack, but having a bottle of flavored water is a nice treat during my long rides. I miss the Cytomax Fruit Punch.
