@slickrock22 nice build plan! I initially built my Fargo with the eesilk post, and ended up swapping it out. There's this one bolt/nut combo on the bottom right of the suspension portion... and I twice had it come loose/off/ get lost. Cane Creek was good about sending a replacement, and I used Loctite, but the second time it happened... I removed it in favor of a regular Easton post....
Thanks for that feedback! Really appreciate it! My biggest concern with my decision (hindsight) is that I wasn't aware of the impact of reach and the fact that the salsa Fargo has a shorter reach because it is designed as a drop bar bike and I would like to use a flat bar. I've been measuring some of my other bikes and it looks like as long as I have 100mm stem I should be fine. I also noticed that Salsa Fargo bikes on the "Bikes of the Tour Divide" article also had flat bars and made it work. Now they could have upsized their frames to compensate for their decision. I probably would have done that if I would have known what I know now.

@slickrock22 makes sense! I think with the longer stem you'll be good.... the geometry is so upright that as long as you get the reach right... it should fit well. I've thought about a switch to flats.. especially since the switch to a rolloff hub with the twist shifters.... but I am a fan generally of the way a drop bar feels on my hands....

Can’t seem To leave the Fargo be ;)

flat bar conversion using a curve Remlaw flat bar for drop bar bikes .. the forward sweep let me keep my stem and maintain the geo… added a PNW pine dropper post too… now it’s a hard tail …

Been running Rene Herse Antelope Hill (2.2"/55mm) slicks lately in the dry and the pavement performance is so good, I don't know if I'm going to switch back to something knobby. I tend to ride pretty close to 50/50 pavement/forest roads with rare stints into trails so it's been a great compromise.

Have a 2021 Fargo, boost front and rear. Considering testing out what I think of 2x on it with the IXF cranks. Appears I can only get 42/22 chainrings for the 104/64 bcd on it, at least easily. Anyone aware of a front derailleur that will work for this, on the inexpensive side, top pull? Plan on using a friction shifter for it so don't need to worry about indexing issues at all. Wondering if something like these should work:

Open to any recommendations. I know that 20 tooth step is large, but I've seen it work successfully. Just need the right derailleur and possibly adapter if necessary. Also, a chainring source for a lesser step, maybe 38T or 40T shifting large ring with 104 bcd.

Edit: Ended up finding pairings of 38/24 and 40/28 so don't need that massive step in the front. Would still like to get 42/22 workable, but I'll first get 2x working to play with, then go for the real wide-low if I feel the need.

Been a journey for sure, but picked up my 2018 Fargo a couple of days ago and feel like I've found the perfect bike for me. Still have a few things to change like putting a brown Brooks Flyer on in place of the black one. Will get more familiar with the bike before making tire changes but that will be the next thing to swap out.

Previous rides were a 1st year Mukluk 2 and 1st year Beargrease (BG has a new home in Iowa with my cousin). 7 years ago I needed the floatation provided by fat tires, but situations have changed and though I'll always love Fatbikes, I simply don't have the need that I once did for one.

Like many, I was torn between the Vaya and Fargo. A couple of days in, I now know I made the right choice!

Hi there,
I just purchased a Fargo today...and I am thinking of upgrading the saddle. I started thinking of Brooks Flyer, particularely for comfort.. and I found your post with your beautiful Fargo with your beautiful Brooks Flyer! How do you like your saddle so far? I see you posted the photos several years ago, so I believe you got some really good experience. Fargo by itself is a very comfy bike, that is why I decided to buy one, but Fargo+Flyer combo, I assume, would make the level of comfort extremely high. I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Salsa Fargo Frame Weight

Size XL Manufacturer 2022

Leaving this here for posterity's sake. Brand new Salsa Fargo frameset weight. Accurate scale.

Frame, rear axle, seatpost collar, Headset cups only: 6.46 pounds. Without axle 6.34. Assume around 6.25 w/o seat collar and headset cups.

I have rejected touted-as-racey steel frames (looking at you Niner) for weighing in this portly, but with the Fargo I'm perfectly happy with this weight. For one it's a big frame with long tubes, a huge headtube, and has very heavy dropout mechanisms. For another it's meant to survive everything for every while hauling a heavy load (backwards in heels ;). It weighs what it ought to weigh.

Salsa Fargo Carbon Fork Weight:

Uncut, without axle 1.49 lbs -- lighter than the carbon fork on my 2021 Salsa Cutthroat. I have to say, to be perfectly honest, I would take heavier. A carbon steer tube just doesn't feel like the right fit with the frame. I'm a bit afraid of the fork actually - if something's going to fail on the bike it's going to be the fork. I don't like the idea either of crashing a carbon steer tube and then continuing to ride it if you're out on a big tour or whatever. Or tightening the stem without a torque wrench. Etc.

But aren't too many stories of failure, so I will try to be a little less scared of the damn thing :)

I'm building up a Salsa Fargo. Frameset is on the way. It's been 10 years since I built a bike, so a lot has changed. I am totally unfamiliar with Boost. It appears that I should probably have a Boost wheelset built up, since the other options need spacers, which doesn't sound ideal to me (assuming that's for people trying to make their older wheelsets work). I see Boost and non-Boost crankset options. Assuming I go with the Boost wheelset, does that mean I need a Boost crankset or non-Boost? Planning to build this up as a 1X12.

Here's an update in case this is useful for anyone else. I called Salsa since I was still uncertain. They said if I go with a boost wheelset that I have to go with the boost crankset for proper chainline. They also said to go with a 73mm dub bottom bracket with the Sram dub crankset that I've selected.
