GOODYEAR, AZ — Two people are dead and 11 others are hurt after a truck crashed into a group of bicyclists in Goodyear Saturday morning.
Goodyear police say it happened on the Cotton Lane bridge near MC 85 around 8:15 a.m.
A woman died of her injuries at the scene. A man died later at the hospital.
Of those injured, the severity of the wounds vary, but all of the riders were adults.
Police say the pickup truck was carrying a trailer and was driven by a man, who has not been identified.
Police cannot say whether the group was hit from behind, and they have also yet to determine if speed or intoxication was a factor.

Stories like this are what have always kept me far away from road riding. Godspeed to the victims.
Yep, me to. I tried road biking one summer 25 years ago. Never again for me.

This is why you never want to become a lycra bandit whose only purpose in life is to ride as many kms in a year as humanly possible. The risks are just too big.

Maybe their only purpose was to go for a nice ride that day. Sometimes people die on mtb rides too. RIP to the fallen riders and the families they left behind.

Tough call for those that just enjoy riding bicycles.
It is.

I wouldn't ride the road anymore but my GF loves it so 4 years ago I capitulated and bought a road bike.
We have a terrific local road riding clique of 20 people and although the clique rarely includes all 20 on the same ride, the group is typically big enough that we feel 'safe.'
Some of us more than others.
I'm one who never feels safe riding the road regardless how large the group is.

The situation in this news story proves that some drivers even eliminate the safety in numbers idea.
I don't know what to do. I only know I don't want to die on the roadside at the hands of some texting fool or bicycle hater.
