One of the LBS has offered me the 2017 Devinci Minus RS for $1549 CAD, regular $1899. There isn't really a whole lot of info/reviews/public opinion on this bike so I'm wondering your thoughts, good deal? Anyone have one of these? Any red flags on the spec sheet? The LBS also offers free tune-ups for life with the purchase of a bike.

DEVINCI

My primary purpose for this bike would be winter/snow trail riding in the Banff/Canmore region. However I'd also like to take it out on the occasional dirt trail in the summer as well as try my hand a a couple of short bikepacking/camping trips in the summer. I know Devinci is marketing this as a snow bike first, but do you see any issues in the geometry that would make this less than ideal for a summer trail bike? One review of the bike said to look elsewhere if you intend to use this bike west of Calgary. I'm assuming this means it's not going to be great on mountain terrain?

I think this bike offers pretty good value for the money especially at $1549. We see quite a few of these circulating in Quebec in the winter time. Fat bikes are still a bit of a rarity here in the summer months.

A few reasons why this might not make the best year round fattie:

-100mm rims are nice for wide winter rubber but depending on what your trails look like in the summer, you might want to run 3.8" or 4" tires and those don't provide much protection for the wide rims.

-Last year they used a 135mm front hub so not directly Bluto compatible if you want to go that route. (not sure if they've switched to 150mm this year but from the pics I still see a quick release and not a through axle up front)

-Avid BB5 work well in winter but nothing to write home about in the summer if you're really pushing this thing

-Geo numbers would suggest this bike leans more on the XC side than the trail side and a bit heavy at 34+ pounds

Appreciate the feedback. $1500 is my budget, so it's looking like this might be the best deal on a new bike I can find with my budget.

I am also looking at a used 2015 Specialized Fatboy with carbon fork. It comes with an extra set of 29+ wheels and it was also converted to a 1X drivetrain (which I prefer). He's asking $1500. The extra set of wheels and the weight savings with the carbon fork make this a pretty good deal. Plus I wouldn't have to pay sales tax.

With the Devinci I get the support from the LBS and the lifetime tune-ups. Guess I need to decide if the peace of mind of buying from the LBS outweighs the utility of an extra set of 29+ wheels and a carbon fork.

Some people are looking for a bike, other people also feel like they are representing the manufacturer.

Remember that who situation with Specialized and the Cafe Roubaix bike shop in Cochrane?

The Devinci 100% a Canadian bike, the bike is made from aluminum that is mined in Canada and all the design and fabrication is in done in Canada as well.

Specialized is a massive sue happy company that sets up the small companies for bankruptcy by forcing them to do larger stock orders than they can handle, knowing they they will tank so their preferred dealers can thrive.

end of rant...

I recently purchased a carbon fork taken off a 2022 Minus fat bike. Could you please describe the type of headset needed for this fork? I had trouble fitting a crown race onto it. It seems to bulge out more where the crown race usually sets in, but this fork spreads out more than most other carbon forks where it meets the steer tube. A Cane Creek 40 with 1 -1/2 inch crown race would not seat down onto this area. Anyone familiar with this fork and the lower crown race needed? Thanks!

The stock headset is a standard FSA Orbit zero-stack 1.5" lower cup.

A picture or two might help....

I don't have pictures. But I would like to mate this fork to my V5 RSD Mayor
  • Headset: Cane Creek ZS44/28.6 Top & EC44/40 Bottom
I am not well versed in headset fitment so I'm thinking the bike shop may need to help out with this one. I will say that the Minus fork is not flat on the bottom - like most forks have and the crown race is either pressed on or uses a split crown. This fork has a bulge that makes it impossible to seat a typical crown race. Maybe designed this way to mate with the Minus frames head-tube?...using a zero stack headset instead.

Should take the standard 1.5 crown race. Cane Creek 40-Series 1.5" Crown Race
