1up Heavy Duty - still worth it?

Other racks are getting good reviews but the 1ups are very nice. I need a hitch rack two bikes (for now).
I've had roof racks forever and the Thule has finally aged out (translated ---- i don't trust it any more).

1up is very nice. I do find the raise/lower mechanism a little clunky and you have to bring a separate lock if you want to eat after your ride. Otherwise they are solid and should last virtually forever. I personally have a Sarris MTR2 (discontinued) that I think is nicer in some ways (built in lock, easy handle to raise /lower) but I don't think it will last as long since it does have some plastic parts. I haven't been as impressed with some friends Kuat racks.

I don't find it as awesome as people say. It's great with one bike. It's okay with any more. Even with droppers it's a pain to get bikes to line up where the shifters don't hit the other bike's seat. With 4 bikes it's a massive hassle. You have to figure out the order to put them on that will work.

Also to put on kids bikes you need to adjust the holders on both wheels. Which makes them not with adult bikes unless you use tools to put them back.

Honestly the 4 bike $450 Hollywood rack I had before wasn't much worse at anything.

Good info. Thanks!

Missed this...

For tall people with XXL/S6 bikes, one has to watch the rear derailleur and the rear rotor with the 1up. Depends on geom / model and rotor size, of course. I'll put on the fat tire spacers soon and see if the extra clearance helps some.

rented a thule once and found it heavy ugly and that it worked great. Used the lock onto receiver and integrated cable locks. Marked up my wheel rims w the strap.

bought the 2 pos heavy duty 1up and its strong as i hoped.
Goes on and off easily with a tool.
Uses a hitch lock for retaining safety
never marks my bike
bikes go on and off super easily and fast. U need locks for traffic stops. Its that fast
hoses off nicely after a trip
works as a stand for checking the bike or washing it in the driveway !!!

dont like

you have to hold the latch level with your hand to smoothly lower the wheel guides. This gets old fast

they dont sell the tilt mechanism as part of the rack standard. Its an absolute must to have. i guess this is done so you can purchase add ons and then get the release length needed. Or two of them perhaps of diff lengths

must use your bike handlebars to lift the rack back into travel position. It works. But requires more force that i thought it would.

the rack barely fits so that when tilted down you can open a truck tailgate. But it does fit. Hard to keep it away from your backup sensors, it needs to be close to the bumper. So we have 1/2" position sweet spot. i will likely mark this position w tape, then spray paint the part that goes into the receiver red. This will let me line it up best each time.

but my biggest beef is that there is no security to this rack. Any dummy w a cordless impact gun has it partially disassembled and off your truck in 30 seconds. nothing is ever safe anyways. But this rack just begs to be stolen.

worth it... any rack that gets the job done is worth it. They all have their ups and downs. 😀

Anyone knows that the inside of a 1-up rack looks like?
Can I drill a hole in it and add a hitch pin lock just to be extra sure it never falls off and goes through someone’s window on the freeway?
I did exactly this with my two 1UP racks and it works great. 1/4" hole horizontally through the middle of the 2" hitch, about 3/4" from the end. Got a locking cotter pin and it only adds about 30 seconds to put on/take off. Cheap insurance!

I wiggle mine as well while I am tightening. Never have a problem. 1up also sells locks for the wheels and the receiver that are keyed alike so it fixes the other two complaints here. Nice thing about the 1up is that it is pretty compact. For 2 bikes I would guess it is a least a foot shorter then comparable racks. I can actually open the lift gate on my Subaru with the two bike rack raised. Don’t even have to put it down.

Yes- The 1Up Heavy Duty is still worth it. I've looked at the new offerings from 1Up and others and while they look good, I do like the modularity of the 1Up. I have had to rebuild a couple (one due to me backing up into a boulder and another due to an attempted theft of the rack) and the fact that you can just buy the pieces is a great benefit. The only complaint I had was the ability to lower or raise the rack easily (they now sell a handle to do this easier).
