Check price

CONCORD FARR, Tennessee

Son's getting a used FS bike for Christmas this year. He is 13, and has not hit that puberty related growth spurt, so I'm looking to spend as little as possible, since this is a short term bike. Given the deals otu there, if any of you is upgrading something like an SLX or NX groupset to something nicer, I'd be interested in the 1X12 drivetrain. Have a cassette that is serviceable, but definitely need the shifter, deraileur, adn crank. Bike has a 2X12 Deore on it, now.

Selling cheap. Pm if you are interested.
Thanks for teh response, but a 2X Deore is what is on the bike now that I am trying to replace with a 1X system.

I've got a 12spd GX Eagle grip shifter that I'd let go of cheap. Also a 10-50 GX cassette in really good shape. A GX deraileur that was likely the problem, but I'll throw it in for free to see if you can make it work, it is straight.

If you are wanting to do this inexpensive as it is not a long term bike, you should be looking at NX.
Reasoning as follows:
For starters, if you currently have a 9-11 speed cassette, you have a hub with a standard HG driver.
All Shimano 12 speed cassettes use the microspline driver, and SRAM above NX use the XD driver.
There are third party 12 speed cassettes that also use the HG driver. But NX uses the HG driver.
Second, NX is a low end commodity component group, so it's perfect for this specific use case - spend as little as possible for a bike you'll be replacing in another year or two anyway.
I don't know your budget, but you can find a full groupset for ~$300 including crankset. Of course that means you'll also need a DUB bottom bracket.
Or you can just buy the shifter, derailleur and chain for ~$200 new (or under $200 used) to use with your existing crankset. You should be able to find a narrow/wide chainring for the outer ring of your crankset. Just remove the inner chainring.
Depends on how cheap you want to make it.

I may be interested. Would need to find an XD freehub, and would prefer the trigger shifter, but I may end up taking you up on this.

All Shimano 12 speed cassettes use the microspline driver,
I actually mentioned in the OP that I was looking for something like an SLX or an NX. I may be mistaken, but I believe the older Shimano's with 11 tooth cog high gears still used the HG driver. Didn't they go to the microspline to fit in a 10 tooth high gear?

Why 12 speed ? You can get great deals on 11speed components. What's one extra gear ?
Two reasons, mainly because the extra 10-20% gearing will help him with some of the really steep hills around here. He uses that gear a lot on his hardtail. Second is, because of the deals going on, I'm figuring it will be easier to find used 1X12's for less than new 1X11's. I've actually picked up some 1X11 parts, a GX shifter ($25) to replace my broken one, just swapped sprockets to make it a 12 speed shifter, and a GX cassette ($40) that I may put on a hardtail I occasionally use for gravel rides.

If I need lower gears the cheap alternative is to find a smaller chainring. I'm running a 11x42 cassette with a 26 t Chainring, I only use the 42 cog as a bailout if you aren't hitting speeds over 25mph then a bigger chainring isn't needed.

This is true, but I've so far pieced together a cassette, deraileur, and shifter, so I'm doing pretty well. Thanks for the thought, I actually hadn't seem 26 tooth rings, so I wouldn't have thought about that!
