Now with several rides and time passed I'm comfy to comment on my upgrade from a Series 4 and sticking with Apple Watch standard/main vs other makes, Ultra and SE. My rides almost always use Abvio Cyclemeter that is in essence same as other Abvio apps but defaults to cycling. It lets you keep data private or send to other services. It works watch only or with your phone.

Battery life seems 10% to 30% better over my Series 4 that likely had diminished life after its 4 years of use. Stand alone use with cellular and bluetooth performs noticeably better but can be a battery burner. A long ride using phone to record and watch as remote seems to be a gain in battery drain.

Overall I'm still happy with it vs others because of all the notifications and how good the Apple Watch is for non-sports matters. While not a sports specialist product, the platform has worked well for me beyond what many say - that's having a Series 2, 4, and 8 watch. I remain feeling it is likely not the right product for dedicated to endurance events but still better than many say. There is also the Ultra model with more battery life.

I will be very curios to know how the Abvio apps will work with the upcoming power save mode coming to the watches.

I also upgraded my Apple watch series 4 to a series 8 (both GPS only model), a nice upgrade IMO. I run Strava on my watch to track my rides, no Garmin necessary. The only thing that I don't like is that in my Strava ride stats is shows the name of my bike and an Apple Watch Series 6. Anyone know how to change that?

I can’t wait to receive my Apple Watch Ultra who should arrive tomorrow!
I REALLY want to see the feedback on the Ultra. Especially with MTB/Trails. It sucks that Strava’s integration thus far has been medocre. I’m really hoping they update things now that the Ultra is out. Not only that, but the standard workout app on the Apple Watch is great, it just doesn’t having biking/trail mode. If they can add that in and have it integrate post ride directly to strava, that would probably be just as useful.

I have the same issue and Strava won't let me change it. I'm guessing that Strava needs to update their app to recognize the Ultra.

I have an Apple watch series ... last year :p , whatever, but I never wear it to ride. I have an Elemnt Bolt that sits right in front of me on the stem, the bars, depending on the bike. Easy to read while I climb for a freaking hour ... plus the heart rate while I ride is hooked to a chest strap monitor, I have a cadence sensor ... just so much better than my watch.

I am surprised how much I've liked the watch but it's just not enough for my rides. YMMV.

Abvio Cyclometer works stand alone or from phone and it will export to Strava, do lots of sports, or keep your data private. There is an annual subscription I find worth it if you want the full feature set.
