So I have been losing weight over the last 6-8 months and have gone from size 38 to currently between 34 and 32. I am getting really tired of paying $80-$100 for shorts every time I hit my next weight goal. I have been using Tasco Scout and PNW Shuttle shorts for 1 simple feature that I can't seem to find on anything lower priced. They have a cell phone pocket that puts my phone safely behind my thigh where it is least likely to be damaged in a crash.

Does anyone know of another reliable brand that has this feature in a lower price point?

It does not have to be an MTB specific brand and I actually prefer shorts without an padding. I wear a separate chamois that I prefer.

7Mesh has the best rear thigh phone pocket in the business. But you pay for it.

Expensive. And worth every penny.

They go on for 50% off every now and then. I’ve taken advantage of it numerous times.

Other shorts with phone pockets that I have used, including Fox, can’t capture the magic of the 7Mesh. They might be out there, but I have not found them yet.

Fox is a less expensive alternative but not in the same galaxy quality-wise. And not that less expensive either.

None of these have a chamois.

Yeah, at those prices I will stick with PNW or Tasco. I love both of them I am just looking to try something less expensive.

I have a number of O‘Neil Shorts that I bought from Costco this summer for $20 or so. They have a number of pockets, and one i think on the side of the leg, maybe not behind the thigh but don’t remember. They are light weight and fit like other MTB shorts I’ve had. like my other MTB shorts, I wear a bib underneath for my chamois.

But, for the price, they are excellent. I wear them off the MTB as well.

The back thigh pocket is a must. I have broken two phones in front thigh pockets and shorts that have cargo pockets are too loose so the phone flops around.

511 tactical makes extensive use of those cell phone pockets across their lineup, and they make a lot of different styles of shorts and pants.

Alternate idea: put the phone in your pack, bag or pouch. Even on shorts that have the dedicated cell phone pockets, I prefer completely empty shorts.
I will check out 511 Tactical, thanks.

I don't carry a bag, pack or pouch. Water bottle on bike as well as a frame strap with tools and spares.

Why not put the cell phone in something like a little hip pack?

Zoic.

It's the only short I use, comes with a great liner, I prefer the longer version but they make a "light" version that has a short leg length.

I use an Iphone 8, fit is perfect on the right side thigh, can't even tell the phone is there.

I have an iphone 12 coming, should fit fine.

Yea, another Zoic. Buy on a sale, write a review, get a coupon.. wash, rinse repeat.

I haven't paid retail price for any of mine.

edit: the iPhone 12 fits fine.. don't have a clue about anything larger.

I would prefer not to add any more gear. I love the Tasco and PNW shorts and the pocket is perfect for me. I am just wondering if there's a lower price option.
Far enough but if you were only carrying a cell phone, you could get a pretty cheap hip pack and save money on shorts by being able to buy cheaper ones. Just another option.

@louiesquared I ride with my phone in the pocket and haven’t had issues. But, here’s a link so you can see the shorts. They are not baggy, which is why I like them. Form fitted, and material is almost like a board short, where you could where out on beach and go to dinner in them.

I also like my Zoic shorts, and like that Zoic warrantied my first pair that separated at the seem. So, they get a nod from me, but you mentioned cheaper so that’s where the costco shorts come into play.
