Has anyone been able to spend time on the v.8 Chameleon and compare the ride to the prior Gen 7? I could not find any reviews online that really go in-depth between both of these models. More focused on the Frame Qualities and Geometry in response.

Would love to hear it out, thank you!

I own a v7 Chameleon and I demoed a v8 for a short time. I think what Steve from Hardtail Party says in his review is close to accurate. First thing I noticed on the v8 was the STA being steeper and the stack being higher. The bike also feels longer (which it is).

If I had to compare the two, I'd say the v8 is more like a trail bike and the v7 is more like an XC bike. The v8 gives up some of its "chameleon" quality to be more trail oriented. I considered getting the v8 to replace the v7, but I find the v7 more versatile because I do things like bike packing and gravel riding as well as normal trail riding. The v7 is basically the perfect bike for that, a bit of a "do everything" bike. The v8 is not a bike I would go bike packing or gravel riding on. That said it is much more capable on the trail than the v7 is given its geo.

In the end it really depends on what you want to do with it. I don't live out west and my terrain isn't insane, so I don't need crazy geo numbers, so for what I want to do the v7 works perfectly for pretty much everything. If you do live in an area with terrain that will really push a bike or ride a lot of black trails and that's what you normally ride, you will want the v8.

My buddy has the V7 and it's such a great do-it-all bike. Especially here in the midwest. They should have left the V7 Chameleon the way it was and released the V8 under a different name.

Have followed Steve’s YT channel since the beginning and he originally had a v7 Chameleon from memory. His more recent v8 review provided a reasonable comparison between the two and and I recall he said the v7 is the more versatile option. Steve’s reviews are good as he describes his own riding style and preferences to his viewers and usually includes a “who is this bike good for” in his wrap up to help viewers gauge suitability of a bike to their own needs.

As a v7 owner I’m not feeling like I’m missing out on much compared with the MX, but that’s just me. If anything, I’m curious about the difference a 9point8 Slack R will make to the v7.

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for your responses in the comparison of these 2 Models now that the new v.8 has been in the wild for some time, appreciate everyone who has taken the time to reply to my post!

Seems like some of the comments came with a "Rough-Landing" but now that the dust has settled I can see a different need for both generations pending on usage and terrain.

Ride on Tin Lizards!
