I need new brakes for a hardtail build. The TRP Quadium seems like a great brake and use common and cheap 1.8mm rotors. The new Slate Evos seem like maybe a less demanding brake, but with 2.3mm thick rotors maybe they won't have any fade problems? The price between them almost works out the same I believe once rotors are purchased...

I weigh 185lbs, typically descend 2000' (after doing the climbs), I'm not crazy aggressive (especially with turns) but I like to go fast. I don't jump, but maybe that has nothing to do with brakes.

What would you recommend I go with for my hardtail? Also, I think I would like to run 180mm front and 160mm rear.

P.S. Not sure it matters, but I have SRAM Guide RSC's on my FS, and they are mostly fine, but sometimes a lever will act up a bit. I also don't think I'm sensitive enough to appreciate the "S" or "C" in my RSCs (if that makes sense).

I don't have any experience with the TRP Slate Evo's. But I did just mount a set of DHR Evo's. After a couple of rides I can say that they have way more power than the (3 yeard old) Guide R's they replaced. If I had to guess I would say the Slate Evo's will have more than enough power for aggressive trail riding on a hardtail. You could always move up to 200/180 rotors if you need more power.

Thanks for your reply @ianick, I wasn't sure anyone was ever going to say anything. I hope those DHR Evos treat you great for years to come.

I decided to try the Quadiums. I'll have to see how they work with basic rotors. Since the cost was almost the same I thought maybe the Quads would be more powerful. Also, it seems 2.3 160mm rotors in 6 bolt aren't available right now. I'll report back after I have my bike built and some time on the brakes in case anyone in the future stumbles on this thread.

One of my Guide RSC levers is going bad on my FS, which really pisses me off. I maybe have to do something about that too...

I just put Trickstuff power pads on my Quadiems and it's night and day for initial bite, with slightly better overall power, too. The OEM pads are not great.

Ed: Sorry, didn't notice original date of posting. Lame, purposeless bump.

I’m thinking of doing the same as you and was curious if the narrower rotors worked well with your Quadiums.

Sames. Love my Quadiems. The red/stock pads ain't great, though.
Swapped pads to TruckerCo, my go-to inexpensive but very effective pads, which are excellent.

I've also used TRP performance resin pads (blue metal backing). They are sooo goood!

I got basic rotors, and I even downsized to 180mm front and 160mm rear from my usual sizes. So far I don't have any complaints, even with the stock pads. I bought some MTX Red pads for backups, and I expect them to be great because they are in my other sets of brakes. But for now basic rotors and stock pads have been fine in my Quads on my new HT. I just still need to learn how to be a better braker... They are different than my SRAM Guide RSC brakes, but not a big deal and they were cheaper. So far I'm happy with them.
