I currently have a Rocky Mounts Monorail that measures 16.25" from the hole in the 2" mounting tube to the farthest out point of the rack when it's folded up. I don't have a ton of room in my garage so I'm trying to find a nice 2-bike rack that has the shortest distance out from the back of the car when folded up. Can anyone with a Kuat Sherpa, Thule T2, etc measure their rack and report? Most don't have that exact dimension on their product pages.

...the 1UP folds up really close to the bumper. And you can slide it in/out to suit your needs.
Of course there's a limit, but yeah that's a nice feature.

I snug mine close to the bumper and use one of these collars so I put it in the same spot each time.

Starting a little chart here for some of the most popular ones in case anyone else needs the info:
20.5" - Thule T2 Pro XT
15.2" MAX and can adjust less (I think) - 1up Heavy Duty Double
16.5 - Rocky Mounts Monorail

So I'm liking the looks of the 1up. Any reason to do the Super Duty double over the Heavy Duty? Or any reason not to? Looks to be 1lb heavier rack with more load capacity for $30 more.

1up again. I have to be careful so that it’s not rubbing the bumper when folded I fold it up. I like the collar idea @J_Westy posted above. but, it’s at most 6” out from the number. And it may not be even that far out.

It’s a really nice set up.

Talked to 1up - sounds like the HD Double is plenty. Does anyone know if there are dealers who carry those? I didn't see a dealer locator on the site. My buddy said he didn't care for their actuation and bike security, but they get great reviews.

No issues.
I secure the bikes in the usual way — via 1Up’s wheel holders.
The only way to buy a new 1Up is off their website.
When I worked for REI, my boss was getting into mountain biking and wanted a good hitch rack.
REI sells Thule, Kuat, Yakima, etc.
I showed him my 1Up and he said, “THAT’S the rack I want!”
In fact he wanted one so bad that he contacted 1Up to see if REI could rep their product.
He said, “I never pay retail.” He wanted the prodeal and he wanted REI to sell 1Up racks.
Didn’t happen.
1Up has all the business they want.

Direct sales only.

There is no such thing as bike security. Anything built in to other racks are child's play.

Of all the hitch racks, the 1UP is the closest- by distance to the bumper and also the maximum that is sticks out away from the bumper. The Kuat and Thule are easier to raise and lower (though 1UP has a handle that makes it easier...I just have not installed it) but the Kuat and Thule stick out a lot more.

I went with a super duty single and an add-on. I personally like being able to have a single tray on the car most of the time. I often ride solo or meet my friends at the trail and with a single tray I can still open the hatch without moving the rack down.

depends. if I lock my Kuat it will be several inches further out from the car than if I forgo the lock and just snug it as close as possible and then tighten. when in this position its pretty darn close to the cars rear. I would imagine this would be the case for several of the Manu you are checking out?
