Resurrecting an old thread. I’m running a Ribbon SL on my Yeti ARC and have not been able to make it feel “perfect” yet. Small bump seems good, but the fork is very eager to use full travel and rides lower than I’d like. I did notice that it seems to work much better with equal pressures in the pos/neg, but the damping feels harsh. Rebound should be spot on, but the stock compression damping feels weird, especially on consecutive big hits. I will need to service mine to see if changing the bath oil makes a difference and perhaps add one more token.

Well, I took mine apart for a lowers and air spring service to find out I had GREASE in the lowers from the factory! No wonder the fork felt like crap! Clean, fresh bath oil and an air spring service + one more HuckPuck and I can now juuuust about bottom it out by bouncing the fork hard on the parking lot. Running 21% sag on a HT frame and the difference in small bump compliance is night and day.

Hmm, that does seem like a lot of grease (thats Slick Honey / Slickoleum / MRP Seal Grease). We grease the seals and bushings, but that looks excessive. Can you let me know the serial number via DM so I can check when and who built this? Thanks

For me at least, the Ribbon has been the most intriguing fork on the market (after Manitou much awaited Mezzer.) Mind you, I've never ridden one, so all of my observations are from reviews and numbers only.

I'm continually impressed with its low weight (even with coil) and stiffness compared to the 36 and Lyrik, despite it's weight being more in line with the Pike and 34.

I'm not a huge fan of its looks, but I'm willing to overlook that - literally because its on the front of the bike and I rarely stare at my fork - and because it's made in the USA.
Old post I know, but figured a long term data point might be useful.

I got a 2018 MRP 29er Ribbon Coil on my GG Smash set at 160mm. That fork worked well for me on the Smash. I did have an issue with the damper that turned out to be operator error in that I didn't service the damper according to the correct schedule. MRP inspected it for me and serviced then dyno tested it. I got the Chocolux upgrade at that time. It was a few months between sending the fork in and riding it again due to the switch between winter bike and summer bike. So it's a bit hard to tease out the differences before/after, but I really enjoyed the fork since it's been Chocoluxed.

I just opened it up to adjust the travel down to 140mm for a new bike. The fork has been a pleasure to own and work on. MRP has been great in terms of post-sale support. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another particularly the coil version. The fork will be on my new bike for the foreseeable future. The longest I've owned/used a fork was 9 years of regular riding. I'm interested to see if I can break that record with this MRP fork. 🤘

I owned an MRP Stage fork since 2014 which has been flawless for the past 7 years requiring minimal maintenance. I installed a Pike that was on my wife's bike and couldn't believe how crappy it felt. Just bouncy, harsh and spikey on the trail. So that brings me back to MRP. Is the newest 2021 Ribbon comparable to the original Stage in terms of performance and stiction? Interested to hear if anyone has had experience with both forks. I'm considering buying one to replace the Pike since I've enjoyed the Stage so much.

I managed to get my Ribbon SL working sweet after quite a bit of fiddling. Now it’s as smooth as anything and the chassis feels great! Still not quite Fox 34 factory supple, but very good anyway.

Great review! Thanks for sharing.

I rode a brand new ribbon SL about a month ago. It was great. Just disappeared on the bike. I never had to think about it. It just worked.

I am comparing to a Mezzer and more directly fox factory 34s.
That's great to hear and what I'm looking for.
On a side note, I sort of wish MRP just stayed with the original arch design of the Stage and just made a 37-38mm 'Enduro' version to add a little more stiffness. Trail/Enduro bikes are so damn slack now and flex gets amplified ten-fold.

Thanks for the recent positive feedback everyone!

I'm sorry I'm not around much on these boards anymore. Over the years my role at MRP has grown quite a bit and I struggle to find the time to regularly review what's posted and respond. I've also been focused on the development and launch of our gravel suspension fork, Baxter, the last ~2 years.

That's not to say we haven't been working on MTB stuff too. If you haven't seen it, we launched Ribbon Custom last week. With that program you're able to customize your particular fork to much greater degree than before, even pick the color (or colors)!

I can't speak too much to what's coming from us long term, but that new program should be a big hint.

I got to talk with Noah at Sedona Bike Festival a little bit.

I learned that there are in fact different CSUs. I was wondering why some look more "blocky" and others more shaped and forged.

I also learned that MRP can do some level of custom tuning during a service, if your a bigger rider like me who might need more rebound adjustment.

Colors, cool. Decals, neat. Different CSUs, alright. Factory adjustable rebound damping, getting warmer...

But still no adustment to the HSC damping? Feels like they've overlooked the elephant in the room.

HSC is vaguely done through their ramp control. It's different, but serves a similar purpose. I have added it to a couple forks - Pike, Lyric and ridden an MRP fork and it generally works well. https://mrpbike.com/pages/suspension-upgrades.
Ramp control isn't HSC at all. HSC is damping which dissipates motion to heat. Springs store and return energy. Ramp Control is a weird one that only works as an extra spring for single hits then requires the fork to fully extend to reset.
