Going through various reviews and product pages trying to decide what our next step will be for full face helmets, but I'm finding that a lot of product listings (and even reviews) fail to mention what type of closure is used for the straps.

You'd think this would be easy information to find, but it drives me crazy that almost no one includes the straps in photos.

Kids are 4 & 6, but I measured them at 53.5 cm, so we're probably into the adult xs / small range for most helmets.

Looking for Fidlock or buckles because I want them to be able to get things on & off on their own easily.

Hoping to keep things to $150 or less per helmet if possible since I'm still working with the kids on being gentle with their helmets.

They currently both ride with a Bell Shield (super cheap & light) and we tried the Sanction in XS for a while but it wasn't particularly impressive, was a bit too snug, and was outgrown quickly.

Some of the contenders so far:
  • Bell Sanction - $100
    • Buckle
    • Was a little underwhelmed by the XS that we had
    • Sizing runs small on these, so I'm not sure if we'd want small or medium
  • 7idp M1 - $110
    • Buckle
  • 7ipd Project 23 ABS - $150
    • Buckle
  • Oneal Sonus Deft - $100
    • Fidlock
    • Possibly a little heavier
  • Triple 8 - T8 Racer - $300, but on clearance at a few places
    • Buckle
    • Visor (product page shows both tinted and clear, isn't clear if both come with the helmet)
Higher priced:
  • 7idp Project 23 Fiberglass - $240
    • Fidlock
    • Interesting safety features
  • iXS Trigger - $260
    • Magnetic closure (same as Fidlock?)
  • Fox Proframe - $260
    • Fidlock
    • Small ranges from 52cm to 56cm with 3 different sizes of pads -- may be less likely to be outgrown quickly

Ruled out:
  • Leatt MTB 1.0 DH - $100
    • D-ring
    • Looked like a really nice spec for the price (DH certified w/ top notch safety features)
  • Fox Rampage - $180, Rampage Comp - $280,
    • D-ring
  • Kali Zoka - $100, Kali Alpine - $150
    • D-ring
  • Kali Invader
    • Fidlock
    • Uses traditional dial adjust fit instead of just pads
  • Fly Default - $100
    • D-ring
  • iXS Xact Evo - $150, Xult DH - $320
    • D-ring
  • 661 Reset - $120, Reset MIPS - $150
    • D-ring
  • TLD Stage - $300
    • Fidlock, but sizing doesn't start until 54cm
  • Smith Mainline
    • D-ring
  • Bell Super 3R - $225
    • Tried one quite a while back, but the traditional helmet adjustment felt too odd to my oldest since he's gotten used to dedicated full face helmets that just rely on pads for fit.

I'll have to check when I get home, but both my son and I have the fox rampage (his is the youth size) that we purchased the second half of last year, and I'm pretty sure both of ours have buckles. My son is 7, and he takes his on/off himself all the time when we go downhill biking, and I've never had to help him with it which I would expect I would if it was a d-ring.

Interesting, wonder if it's changed -- current Rampage product listings for both the youth and adult models say d-ring:

Ah -- I forgot to include that one in the list. I'd ruled it out due to wanting something that uses just pads instead of dial adjustment for fit.
Didn't realize it uses a dial.

I was going of of this:

"Invader comes with a large selection of antibacterial pads, 3 sizes of cheek pads, 2 different sized neck rolls and 2 choices in top pads, allowing you to create your very own personalized fit"

This review had some better shots of the Invader 2.0, including this one from the rear where you can see the dial:

The design is pretty close to other lighter weight XC helmets with removable chinbars, just with a non-removable chinbar.

funny enough, we are at highland bike park and my son was complaining about his Rampage helmet being too small (youth large) so we went to the bike shop and picked up an adult small Fox Rampage. I didnt even think about this conversation we had in the past, and was surprised after we bought it that it was a d rings. Took a while but my son seems to have figured out how to put it on. The guy working there actually gave incorrect (and probably very dangerous) instructions on how to use the d-rings given I have never done it before, but it didnt sound right so I looked it up and got it figured out.

For the record, we bought the Kali. It does have the Fidlock and the adjustable in the back. The cheekpads are adjustable/removeable. The padding is really pretty minimal -- not sure I would buy it again.

Thankfully, the vents are great, and keeping my 5 year old cool on hot days. He's just got the Fidlock figured out and knows how to put it on without having the BOA part get in the way.

Thankfully, saved his face in an OTB crash the first time we wore it! [emoji106]

My three all have the Sanction as their FF helmet, and I've paid between $60 and $90 for them from Amazon. Given how quickly they grow I don't really want to spend big $ on helmets, especially as they have FF, trail and pump track/skate park helmets... And ski helmets!

My kid's head was already too big for the Sanction [emoji2959]

Figured I‘d update this thread since I didn‘t find much info when looking for a kids size ff helmet for my daughter
Recently bought my 11yr old an ixs trigger ff mips. She measures 50-51 and the xs fit her perfectly. It‘s light, good ventilation, comfortable, has dial micro adjustment and fidlock. Got her the grey camo to match my black camo one.
