Magura recalled the 1St. Gen Gustav Disc Brakes in the early 2000's with no clear reason why? Was it a caliper or lever problem? I have a set of N.O.S. levers and would like to use them as long as it won't send me for dental reconstructive surgery. Anyone remember what the recall was for? Second question... Can I use them on my HS33's, one is an open system that allows for expansion the other a closed. In my eyes it would be a conversion from closed to open where the 33 is a close system. Not sure if that would lead to mushy lever feel or a no/off switch grabby lever.

Thanks... -John Y.

Those don't look like the gen1, gen 1 had a big rectangular reservoir. Pretty sure this is gen1 (I had a set). I'm even skeptical that is gen 2 above, since my riding buddy also had Gustavs, gen 2. They looked more like the gen 1 than that.

.

PRODUCT: Magura Bicycle Brakes - Magura USA, of Olney, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 360 hydraulic disc brakes. These 2001 Gustav M hydraulic disc brakes are the only Gustav brakes with silver brake levers. Bicycle stores sold the brakes nationwide from September 2000 through May 2001 for about $260 each. They were also sold with Cannondale MT 4000 tandem bicycles.

PROBLEM: The brakes could fail, causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and suffer serious injuries.

INCIDENTS/INJURIES: Magura has received no reports of incidents or injuries.

Huh, says they were only on the tandem C-dale bikes. I wonder if that was some kind of "special" Gustav M that wasn't the same as aftermarket and the others?

I had those - best brakes I ever had modulation and power-wise.
Worst brakes I ever had in terms of leaks and general mishaps (the reservoir could get knocked in a crash and starts to rotate towards upside down....fun)

The silver levers were replacement parts for the first gen, I think to try kerb the issues with the rotating reservoir?
If I remember correctly the silver levers were rebadged lower-end brake levers (louise and clara?)

This is Gen 2:

Best brakes I've ever owned....though short-lived due to selling the bike.
