I am happy to find this thread. After a few pavement rides I am considering selling the bike. I will mostly use the bike for pavement and very light trails.
Is worth the effort/cost to change to 34T or shall i just sell it and look for a used Marlin 5, 6 or Dual Sport ?

Hi,
As per my experience it is worth to upgrade chainring as Marlin 7 has better shifting gear with the clutch and you are not going to get same on lower model Marlins.
Bike will be considerably faster after change, but it will not loose ability to ride through sandy forrest trails.
Anyway, your investment in upgrade should not be too high compared on lost value when selling bike.

Thanx guys, I just ordered the 34T, found it on bikeinn with delivery to sweden for $20

A fair amount to spend at this point since I considering selling it..

Good to know about the clutch.. will definitely do my home work/ test drive before purchasing again...

It is totaly crazy in Sweden, no bikes available.. so basically bought what I found.

Great that you found a 34T chainring. Small investment in time and money to see if the bike better meets your needs before putting it up for sale. I am so much happier with mine after the switch! Don’t waste the money for a longer chain either if you seldom plan to use the giant rear sprocket. Plenty of component shortages here in the US which has caused delays for some of the bikes. Happy riding!!

I fitted a 32T FSA chain ring to my 2021 Marlin 7. Also a Shimano chain cut to 114 links.

You can go to 34T but this seems a little high to me unless you have no uphill or are super fit.
I agree 28T was a poor standard choice.

Just received and installed a 34T chainring and for me it was a game changer, the bike is now useable.

Very easy install, no need for removing the crank, as I saw on youtube... Just 4 allen bolts and the pedal, then carefully slide it out.

I didnt change the chain either (The chain is a bit short for the rear 46T but it works and I will very seldom use it)

Can not recommend bike inn... 4 weeks delivery time is not OK when It was supposed to be 4days..

?? what is bike inn ??

Is that the carriers fault or the shippers fault? USPS has been crippled for over a year now, FedEx has big challenges at some of the depots. Was this an international delivery? So many issues with international, not just carriers, add customs on top of it all.

I am finding the postage from US and UK is a little slower but not much, generally 2-3 weeks.

Postage from China is poor having blown out from 3 weeks to 5-6 weeks.

I had an broken should injury last January and I have a go signal from doctor to ride bikes again. I don't think I will be back in trail soon. I just want to ride mtb on gravel / smooth offroad we have here. So just to get the hang of it.. I want to try this Trek Marlin 7 2021. It is being offered to me in a good price.

However, looking at the specs online

135x5mm QR - Rear
100mm QR - Front ?

FrameAlpha Silver Aluminum, internal routing, chainstay disc brake mount, rack and kickstand mount, 135x5mm QR
*ForkSize: M , ML , L , XL , XXL
RockShox Judy, coil spring, preload, TurnKey lockout, 46mm offset for 29'' wheel, 100mm QR, 100mm travel

Is it really 135 x 5 mm? Coz what i know is :

NameFront axle (length Ă— diameter)Rear axle (length Ă— diameter)
Quick-release100mm Ă— 9mm135mm Ă— 10mm

Can someone confirm this ?

Well, fast forward to December 2021 and 34T is sold out everywhere. I got the 32T directly from FSA's website. I hope it will make this bike somewhat tolerable now.
Hmm, I'm planning to try a 32T chainring too because I don't want to lose climbing gears, which I need with how I ride.
I put a deposit down on a Marlin 7 for next season but this was after a lot of number crunching trying to figure out gear ratios, all while comparing the gearing to my Specialized Hardrock Ultra which was fixed and reconditioned to a 3 x 9 setup with a 44 34 24 crankset and a 12 - 36t chainring. This set up has a HUGE range as you can imagine.

I determined that with the 11 - 46t cassette and a 29 inch wheel, the Marlin would have two less fast gears than the Specialized if you observe that the latter has about 14 when you account for the redundancies inherent in a 3x system. I wanted to retain the torquey 28t - 46t gear ratio on the Marlin 7 but I determined that I was only able to let go of the absolutely faster 44 - 12t gear on the specialized. The 44 - 14t gear was still a good 11% or so faster than the top gear on the Marlin 7 and I make good use of this gear while sprinting. Switching from a 28t chainring to a 32t chainring makes the escape velocity on the Marlin 7 increase from 35kmph to 40kmph, according to the 99spokes website.

In the case of the 34 vs 32t chainring on a Marlin 7, you will get a ratio of 3.09 vs 2.90 in the fastest gear and it will be about a 6.25% difference in speed. Or, you will spin out 2 - 3kmph faster with the 32t chainring than on the 34t chainring.

If I was only doing road riding, I would be going for a 34t chainring but I also want to be able to climb hills too and I'm not a small guy. Seeing as I was dealing with a shop for an original sale, I was able to determine what the potential issues were before actually taking the bike home. (I have 9 months to make a final decision and the money is refundable and transferrable so that's awesome)
But ya, I agonized over the issues you guys brought up and in the end, I elected to go with the 32t chainring but also to upgrade the drivetrain to the Deore 1 x 11 m5100 shifter / cassette / derailleur with the 11 - 51t cassette. (The other upgrade is a Rockshox Recon Silver RL) The shop handled this REALLY well and I am SO excited for spring.

While the 34t chainring is still an option for me, the 32t chainring is better for my needs: I don't want to sacrifice my climbing gears and the upgraded cassette allows me to still retain the bottom end.

Not sure it is worth going to a 11 speed drivetrain at this price point.

I also fitted a Recon silver RL fork and this is noticably better than the standard Judy.
You probably also want to buy a fork pump.
cough I don't want to give away details of the financials but let's just say it was advantageous to deal with the shop and roll this in with the purchase price. How should I put this? The specs and price of the upgraded Marlin 7 is in line with comparable bikes available at that price point.

We were basically trying to 'make' a Marlin 8 where it counts since that bike is only available in an XL frame at the largest, and I required an XXL frame to accommodate my leg and arm length.

And yes, I will have to get a fork pump. We will finalize the transaction in the spring :)
