Honestly, Chumash isn't that fun in my opinion. It’s a pretty steep climb and a boring descent. And Hummingbird is in pretty bad disrepair these days. Really chewed up and eroded, loose, and hard to follow the lines from everyone blowing the corners and switchbacks, also, a lot more hikers on Hummingbird.

There are better trails up there.

Park across the freeway from Rocky Peak Park Trailhead. Pedal and/or hike (depending on your fitness level) up to where the fire road meets Hummingbird, take a breather BUT continue past Hummingbird.

There are two other trails up there by the name of The Grudge and Undertow, and possibly a third new one by now, not sure... use Trailforks App to find them.

Be aware that these are expert level trails. So be ready for some serious tech, and a few white knuckle moments if you take either with some speed your first time. That being said I’d argue they’re less dangerous than Hummingbird is in its current state.

Put a bell on your bike, don’t be a dick to people (that means yielding and other basic etiquette) and have fun!

Hey thanks ~
I heard Grudge is pretty gnarly !! :)
I had wondered about Hummingbird-saw some videos where the trail basically is super hard to discern...
Many thanks
I don't mind a steep climb, long as it isn't as hot as today :)
I'll check those out

Park at Corriganville and ride up Stagecoach...I think the trail is called Stagecoach. That will take you up to Rocky Peak. From there you can ride up to Hummingbird, Grudge, etc.

The trail will spit you out on Kuehner...you'd ride the street back to your car.

Please do not ride up Stagecoach. It is a very fast one way trail and there are some corners where riders will absolutely not hear or see you.

Fortunately in all my years riding there I've never seen someone going the wrong way.

If you look at the ridelogs, the most common place to park is on Smith road: https://www.trailforks.com/ridelog/view/24511944/
I can't find any ridelogs showing folks riding against traffic on Stagecoach.

Personally I think, even as a new rider, Hummingbird is quite easy and fun. I did not enjoy the Grudge at all. Only 2 spots (on HB) I don't like yet as I don't trust my bottom bracket height. There is also a great jump-line called G-Spot out there, but the 2 story roll off bank turn needs maintenance.

I was helping film for friends as I ran out of steam that day after 4 shuttles of Hummingbird/Grudge:
