Saw reports from some that rode there last weekend. Also, there was a BUDU race recently I believe so you may search for that and find something? Looked mostly good as far as mud and snow. Probably even better now after the sun and warm. One report that the little mud there was nearly ruined the drivetrain. That has been my experience when there is mud, puddles, snow, dry and dusty or any of those and freezing temps at Ancient Lakes. Twice I was barely able to make it back to the car and couldn't switch gears for the last four or 5 miles due to mud. Might be fine but may consider bringing a small brush and some chain lube. 2 other times I had the same experience but it was dust totally hosing the drivetrain and felt like my drivetrain had been left out in the rain for 5 years by the time we were heading back. Brutal dirt out there!

Yeah I avoid the mud most places here on the east side. The clay content is so high that it sticks and builds up really fast. It also hardens like concrete, so any ruts, hoof prints, tracks left when muddy can be come really difficult to repair when it dries out. I will probably head over there Friday afternoon and/or Sat AM

It would be interesting to see if Super Boost Plus bikes would have an advantage riding in these conditions because of the generous mud clearance in the rear. My Pivot Switchblade has a 29 X 2.6 tire in back and it looks like you could just about fit a 29 X 2.8 in there if you wanted to.

I think the main point is to try to avoid trail damage.

We finally made it out there this past weekend. Dry, and VERY busy. I've never seen so many people out there, but usually we hit it earlier in the season. Fortunately the horse damage was minimal. There have been times when we've ridden that where the trail might have well of been a horse stable.

Has any body every started a ride from the trailhead over near Wanapum? We drove over there after our ride to scope it out and there were several cars there. I am mostly wondering if it is doubletrack or singletrack?

Are you talking about the one off Sunland Rd? If so, that's where I typically start. It's all old doublet-track until you hit the Amphitheatre. Makes the drive a lot shorter coming from 90/Ellensburg, and the extra double track is a good warm-up/cool-down

Yes, the one off of Sunland Rd. I figured it was probably double-track up to the intersection with the other trails. We might try that next time, even though we're coming from the east side. Thanks for the info.
