So when they reopen for the summer I was planning to go to some lift-served downhill near/within Massachusetts and the two contenders are Thunder Mountain and Highland. Thunder is closer overall but I've heard great things about highland. What do all of you think?

Both are great bike parks and are different experiences. My advice would be to hit them both up. I could go on and on but I think I'll bullet point to make it easier.

Thunder:
  • Longer runs and shorter lift lines in general, unless there's a race or a busy zip line day.
  • More chunky and technical than Highland, but less drops.
  • 3 full trail jump lines. medium, big, and ridiculous. Not a ton of jumps or drops on the other trails though :(
  • Dries quickly, but the rocks are slick as snot when wet.
  • The scene is pretty chill. They do ziplines and rafting out of there so lots of families, but no problem having beers in the lot.
  • Food and bar are decent, but pretty slow.
  • They just re-allowed camping in the parking lot! River and other camping options nearby.

Highland:
  • Runs are short, but long enough to satisfy.
  • Lift lines get NUTS on the weekends, which includes Fridays now.
  • The trails are more creative than Thunder. More jumps, drops, rollers. Way more big-boy options.
  • Older tech trails are very boney, but a good change of pace.
  • Jumplines are more dirt jumpy with bigger lips and shorter distances.
  • Some killer "Ninja Lines" on a lot of the trails.
  • Killer scene. Food and bar are solid. New outdoor tiki bar, killer vibe.
  • No more camping in the lot, or nearby. Huge bummer. VRBO or drive away.

I think thunder would be better for me, I got a nice full-suspension bike and I need to feel better about its cost, so the tech there would be nice. I also hate long lines, and I'm fine with slow food. I want the longest runs I can get from going up the lift once as I only have a day there. Anyway, thanks for the advice!
