Hey guys. I imagine this topic has been beaten to death but shockingly, I can't find a thread on it. Apologies if I have overlooked one or more.
I have two fat bikes en route (hopefully...we are in week 2 now of a shipping delay).
The bikes come with Level T brakes. Those are a no go for me. They lasted less than 24 hours on my Honzo before I swapped them out for 4 pot XTs. Among many other things, I need adjustable reach without having to unclamp the levers from the bar.
The XTs have been fantastic. No wandering bite point despite lots of 20 minute plus generally uninterrupted high speed alpine descents.
I am inclined to go with the 4 pot XTs again. My LBS will swap them out for me on both bikes for a VERY modest up charge.
Just wondering if this is a case of being careful what I wish for, in terms of giving up DOT fluid for mineral oil.
I will be running the bikes for up to 4 hours at a time in temps as low as minus 15 or so celsius (about 5 degrees F).
Any issue with mineral oil at these temps?
Unfortunately my LBS has no access to Codes for 3 months. Other options are Magura MT Trail Sports and Hayes Dominion A4s (DOT). I don't have pricing yet on either, but I expect that the Hayes (and maybe the Maguras) will be considerably more expensive than an XT swap.
I don't want to turn this into a thread about which brakes are best (although feel free to comment if you wish). Primarily interested though in the issue of DOT fluid v. mineral oil in winter temps.
Thank you.
